Mr Mountfort, who designed m« of tha early churches and many «€ public buildings in and. around Oars*churcb, was born in England i* 189 ft, and by IS4B he was an aidutoc* w%*» designs for church work had W0« him distinction. He came to CaafeerlKify by the Charlotte Jane in 1850. WJuia his best-known work is tin QUI rincial Buildings, which wen B1 pleted in September, 1865, other «fcampies in. the City show dw characteristics aim devotion *o tbm Gothic style. A little-known work of ltd is Uso Lighthouse at Godley Heads, whits was completed in 1863. Mis Fom ««•- tioned yesterday that her lather haul also been the araiitect for the Napier Cathedral, which was destroyed ia the earthquake, for' the Canterbury Museum, and for the fast church at Lyttelton—Holy Trinity—the fou&iation stone of which was laid by J. K. Godley in 1852, bat which was abandoned after being opened in m oartially completed state in 1833. Other churches designed by him ineteded Holy Trinity, Avonside. St. Pkal's Papanui, the belfry at St. Michael's, ana the church at Baapan. He ah® designed a small* church which ww erected in Borneo. There were others she did not recall. For many years before his death ra 1898 Mr Mountfort was architect far the Canterbury College Board of Governors.
