Downey, of Wai&i, who has | been visiting friends on the "West Coast, has returned to the North Island. Mr John O'Eegan, Cronadun, has been returned unopposed as the settlers' representative on the Nelson Land Board. Miss K. Boyes, who has been visiting friends at Black's Point, has returned to Christchurch. Mr W. Armstrong, who has been visiting Greymoiith, returned yesterday to Nelson. Mr C. McGinley and Miss A. McGinley left yesterday for Nelson, where they will attend the wedding of their brother, Mr L. McGinley, to Miss M. Kincaid. Mr Ernest Short arrived yesterday from 'Wellington to take part in the Greymouth Philharmonic Society's production of "Hiawatha." At a meeting of Sit. Mary's Ladies' and Men's Debating Club at Hokitika on Tuesday evening, Mrs M. McGavin was the recipient of a handbag, in recognition of her constant willingness to assist the social functions of the club. Wallsend Mine. The Wallsend mine will not work any more this week owing to lack of orders. It is expected to resume on Monday. Cobden Petitions. Petitions lodged by several farmer ratepayers in the Cobden Town Board area for inclusion in the Grey county are being considered by a Commission which opened proceedings yesterday, and will continue to-day. The Commissioner of Crown Lands at Hokitika (Mr T. Cagney) and the District Land Valuer of Nelson (Mr M. Carmichael) comprise the Commission. When proceedings opened yesterday it was decided to adjourn to enable the Commissioners to inspect the farms concerned.
ObituaryThe death occurred at the West land Hospital yesterday of Mrs Thomas ,McBride, of Matainui, after a long illness. She was a native of Okura, and a member of the McPherson family. She was 39 years of age, and is survived by her husband and nine children. South Westland. Many motorists visited . the i Franz Josef and Fox glaciers last Monday. They stated that the road south was in splendid order. At Franz Josef glacier a track is to be completed shortly to Alec's Knob. This is being completed by a vote from the Tourist Department, and when available, will afford an unusual view of the glacier. • . A similar track is to be made on Fox glacier to the top of Cove Bock,which will afford a dominating outlook over that glacier. The lambing season in South Westland has been a pronounced success, a satisfactory increase being recorded, 1 one settler having nearly a thousand lambs in his flock. Black Sanding. i Considerable success is reported in • "black sariu-iig" on Gillespie's Beach and also at Bruce Bay. At Gillespie's i there is every possibility of a dredge ; being established. It is considered that , hydro-electricity can be supplied from a lake in the vicinity, where there is ample fall. Bowling. The New Zealand Bowling Council has approved of the formation of a new Bowling Centre at Westport as a result of the recent secession of the fowling clubs in the Buller district from Grey Centre. A new club has been formed at Waimangaroa, which will be under the new Centre.
