CHALLENGE SHIELD. CANTERBURY <S) V. HAWKE'S BAY (0). The Canterbury representative liockey team successfully defended the New Zealand Ghal» lenge Shield on Saturday, beating Hawk® a Bay by three goals to nil. The game wa« fast and interesting, the visitors' style of play being a dißtinot contrast to that of the local eleven, who depended on short passing to win tho game. Two alterations were xnado in Canterbury's forward line, J. Mounsey replacing H. Ford and L. Edgmton replacing D. MoOormick. The following teams took the rafltefbiiW (Red and Black) Goal, H. However, the Canterbury forwards kept play in the vicinity of the visitors' circle. Tutere was forced to hit over and Turbitt cleared the top bar w.tn a lofty shot from a penalty corner. Mounsey accepted a pass from H. Hore and put Canterbury la a scoring position with a centre which was not turned to account. McNab put io a fast sprint down the left wing, but Snook came well out and cleared to the lme. Ateria intercepted a rush by tbe Canterbury forwards, and sent Toralin away, but a twenty-five was the only result.. Turbitt and Mounsey combined in a clever piece of play when the ball travelled back and forth until Turbitt got possession in the circle and opened Canterbury's score with a clover shot. Canterbury 1, Havke's Bay 0. Shortly after C. Hore transferred to Bherrlffs, who ran well down and hit the post with a neat angle shot. Turbitt, following in fast, pushed tbe ball into tho net. Canterbury 2, Hawke'a Bay 0. Mahoney started the Hnwke's Bay forwards moving, but 0. Rogers cut in and saved well. Half-time camo with no change in the score. Canterbury opened the second spall with a strong attack which found Tutero ready. Geddes got the visitors out of trouble with a long hit,' and Fitzmaurice and McNab went down, but were stopped by Dash. Tomlln led tbe visitors' forwards, who wore sent back by 0. Rogers. Pullwood, Turbitt, and 11. Hore were prominent in a Canterbury run which compelled Tutere to hit behind. McNab led the visitors' forwards in a good run, but Snook came out and kicked clear. 0. Rogers stopped a rush by the visitors and sent Mounsey away, the latter passing to Turbitt, who beat Tutere cleverly. Cantorbury 3, Hnwko's Bay 0. Turbitt, Edginton, and 11. Hore led tho Cantorbury forwards, who wcro stopped by Qeddes, but Shorriffs seourod and passed across to Mounaey, who liit behind. B. Rogers sent Sherriffa away, but Geddoa intercepted and Hawke'a Bay camo down, led by Tomlin, but Snook waa safe.. Tho visiting forwards put in a fow dashing ruus which found the local backs sound, but the balance of the game was in Canterbury's favour, and the whistle sounded with the final score Cantorbury S, Hawke'a Bay 0.
