NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. After a fine day on Friday, the weather changed on Saturday to a biting cold day, making it unpleasant for anyone having outside duties to carry out. Yesterday tho weather again changed to bright sunshine, a pleasing contrast from the previous day. _ Tho committee appointed to carry out arrangements in connexion with tho forthcoming band contest met at tho band room on Friday evening last. The Mayor, who is also president of the. band, presided. There was a full attendance. Mr J. Noble (president), Mr A. Heen (secretary of the Provincial Bands' Association), Mr McDuff (secretary of the Canterbury Pipe Bands' and representatives of the North Canterbury Pipe Band were also present. Mr Heen supplied a good deal of information in regard to the procedure to be followed and to the fees payable to tho Dominion Bands' Association. He also reported that there would be about seven bands competing in the C Grade, and probably there would be six pipe bands, besides a number of bands in the B grade. It was decided to hold the marching competition in Dudley Park, and that a charge of 1& entrance be made. The musical selection will be held in one of the halls in the evening. Correspondence was reftd from the -Railway . Department stating that day excursion tickets would be available to bandsmen competing ana their wives. The tickets will extend over the week-end. It was decided to extend an invitation to the Woolston Band, winners of last year's Dominion championship, to be present. Mrs J. C. Bayley (Fernside) .and Mrs H. K- Kippenberger were joint hostesses at a flag bridge party held at the residence of the latter on ""day evening in aid of the Rangiora Plunket Society's funds. The .prizes were won by Mrs F. G. Tolmie, Miss K. Horreli, and Mr J. M. Fraser. Others prosent were Mr and Mrs P. G. Ellis, Mr and Mrs R. Newman, Mr and Mrs W. Mackenzie, Dr. and Mrs L. MKing. Dr. and Mrs E. S. SCARGILL. Instead of the usual euchre and dance, the Scargill Miniature Rifle Club's monthly social took the form of a , gift evening for Mr B. A. Coo, who is shortly to be married. There was a good attendance, Mr A. D. Fox (president of the club) presiding. After an hour of progressive euchre, a shore programme of musical items, including quartettes, ducts, solos, and pianoforte solos, was given by local performers. Those contributing to tne programme were Mesdames E. .A. Foster and R. S. Johnson, Miss Gibb, and Messrs T. O. Johnson and R. »• Johnson. Mrs T. O. Johnson acted as accompanist.
