To celebrate the tenth anniversary of ] the formation of a branch of the Plunkefc Society in the Ellesmcrc district the president and committee entertained the-mothers-and their friends at a wellattended- gathering at Leeston. Mrs Cecil Wood, secretary of the Christchurch Centre, addressed the mothers 011 the objects of the Society, and asked their eoroperation with the committee iu its work. At afternoon tea the members partook of a birthday cake given by the president, Mrs W. 0. Ileiinie. The following contributed to the musical .programme: —Mesdames Eggclton and Mackie, Misses Harvey (2) Hidden, and Martin, and Masters John Mcllraith and W. Eggelton. Misses J. Bowis and IJ. Eggelton played 'the accompaniments. As a birthday gift the mothers of the Ellesmere district gave £3 to the Karitane Hospital. In the schools' championship match between the winners of tho football competition on the northern and the southern side of the Selwyn river the Leeston team (southern) defeated Tai Tapu-Motukarara-Greenpark by 18 points to nil at Leestou on Thursday afternoon. - At a meeting of tho Ellesmere School Sports Association arrangements were made and officials appointed for the football and basketball tournament to be played at Southbridge on August 21st. Entries from sixty teams have been received. The question of the eligibility of all schoolboys taking part in the football competition was discussed, and after reference had been made to the minutes of the May meeting a motion was carried affirming that both by the Rugby Sub-Union's rules and by the agreement of the Association all boys attending primary schools were eligible to play in the competition. It was decided that the same condition should be observed in 'he seven-a-sido tournament. An invitation from the Ellesmere Slib-Union for representatives of the teams in the schools' competition to confer with the executive of the Sub-Union was accepted, and the date suggested was September Stli. ISLINGTON. A general meeting of the residents of Islington, Tcmpleton, and Hornby, a;ul neighbouring districts was held night" in the Islington Social Hall to discuss the question of forming a golf club and the construction of go'if links iu the Teinpleton Domain. The iarg'* attendance gave the promoters ot' th-j'project, enthusiastic support, and it was unanimously decided that a club be formed immediately, to be named the Tcmpleton Country Golf Club.. The chairman. Me L. C. Walker, oi Horuby, in his opening address, drew attention to the wonderful opportunity for development offered by the natural conformity of the land, and the ample area of the proposed ground. The present nine-hole course, which had been formed by a very few enthusiasts, at practically 110 expense, appeared excellent, anci he .was. infermed that golf expei ts who had looked over ch>; ground were of. the . opinion that it could be developed into a.course second to none in New Zealand. The grouud was more easy of access from the City than many other Christchurch links, and he was of the opinion that many town members would be enrolled.
