BOROUGH COUNCILS
GERALDINE. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council was held in tho Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. Present were the Mayor (Mr B. K. Macdonald), and Crs. J. R. Lack, E. H. Logan, J. W. Miller, W. McClure, M. Campbell, and G. H. Batrick. For the Finance Committee, Cr. \V, McClure reported that receipts since last meeting had totalled £2IS 7s Cd, including rates £2B 15s, sanitary fees £25 lis 6d, reifl £8 17s 6d, drivers' licenses £3 .10s, rent Town Hall £lO, library receipts £6 16s, and refund of wages from Unemployment Board £l4l 17s 6d. There was a debit balance at the bank of £764 6s Bd, accounts for paymentl that day totalled £lB5 17s lOd, leaving a debit of £'JSO 4s 6d. The notice of motion tabled by Cr. Logan at tho previous meeting was then dealt with. Cr. Logan moved: "That the order to cut hedges back to tlio boundary be rescinded, it being too drastic a measure." Cr. Logan staled that if the hedges were cut back to the boundary, the natural beauty of the town would be destroyed. In seconding the motion, Cr. Patrick thought that in making the ratepayers cut their fences back to the boundary the Council were taking too drastic measures, but there were some in the town that certainly needed cutting. Something would have to be done, however, because fences were being allowed to grow too far out on the footpaths. Tho Mayor said that on thinking the matter over, his opinion was that the motion previously carried was a little too drastic. The motion, on being put t'o the meeting, waß carried, Crs._ Miller, McClure, Patrick, and Logan voting for, and Crs. Lack and Campbell against. Mr S. Banka Wr&te on behalf of the Metropolitan Headquarters of the Boy Scouts' Association, thanking the Borough Council for their donation. Mr R. prwin, of the South Canterbury Employers' Association, wrote ashing the Council to become members of the Association. The letter was received. The secretary of the Geraldine Sports Association wrote applying iot the use of the Domain ort September IStH for the!? annual seven-a-side Rugby tournament. The secretary of the Geraldine County Hockey Bttb* Association wrote asking the Council's permisison for the use of the Domain on Vje occasion of the annual tournament to be held on August 27th. For the South Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes, Mrs F. M. Cook wrote asking for permission to use the Domain on the first Saturday in December for a Gountry dancing competition. Permission was granted to each applicant. The Town Clerk, Timaru. wrote asking the Borotigh Oetmdil, in conjunction with the County Council, to appoint a representative on the South Canterbury District, Council of Employment. Mr K. Mackenzie Was appointed the Borough end County Councils representative. ... , The secretary of the Geraldine School Committee (Mr J, B. Stewart) Wrote bringing to the notice of the Council complaints received from patents of the offensive smell from the open drain In Wilson street. It was necessary for the secondary pupils to pass this on their way to school, and the committee would be giad if the drain could be attended to afid covered. It was decided to leave the matter to the Sanitation Committee for a report. The Geraldine County Council wrote statin," that they were prepared to pay £-o, halt the estimated cost for installing hydrants for the protection of the native bush. Cr. Miller moved that a letter of thanks be sent to the County Council for their action in this matter. Thiß Ivas seconded by Cr. Lack, and carried. ~ j Cr. Miller reported on the new road that had been formed at the back of the bush, and said that it Was a credit to Mr Hayes. it was going to be a good road, and would bo a valuable asset. Cr. Miller referred to the Borough Council's purchasing a motor-lorry for its work in the borough. He Was of the opinion that work would be carried out more quickly and expeditiously if they had a tip-lorry. He would ask the permission of the Oounoil to brirnz down a report from the AVorks Com mittee on the question.
