SEAMEN'S INSTITUTE. A very enjoyable concert, arranged * by Miss R. Hatchwell. of tho Lyttelton Guild, was given in the Seamen's Institute on Thursday evening. The programme was as follows : —Pianoforte solos and choruses, Mrs Brookes; songs, Misses J. Nystram, M. Loader, and A. Voyce and Master Emms; re- r citations, Master J. Fowlds. Miss E. Ayres' puyils gave some very graceful dancing. Hearty applause greeted all i the items. Twenty men were present. Golf. A ladies' match for handicapped players will be played at Diamond Harbour to-day for a trophy presented by Mrs W. Paton. Cycling. The Lyttelton Cycling Club has decided to postpone the race arranged lor this afternoon to Teddington and back owing to several riders being on the sick list. It is expected that the remaining riders will hold a sweepstake race. Obituaxy. The funeral took place at Lyttelton yesterday morning of Mr Daniel Mahar. an old and respected resident, whoso death occurred on Wednesday night. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph's Church by the Rev. Father P. Cooney, who afterwards conducted the service at the graveside, lx>th services being largely attended. The palJ-bearera were Messrs Thomas, Dennis, and Daniel Mahar (sons) and Mr \V. Bradley (son-in-law). Mr Mahar arrived on the West Coast from Ireland in 1872 with his w4t'e, who predeceased him some years ago. The couple shortly afterwards settled in Lyttelton, where Mr Mahn • later established a drapery business. He is survived bv four sons, Messrs D. J. Mahar (Wellington), D. W. Mahar (Linwood), J. Mahar (New Plymouth), and T. A. Mahar (Lyttelton), and four daughters, Mrs F. Dennehy (South Westland), Mrs W. Bradlev tChristehurch), Mrs J. Gardiner * (Wellington), and Miss W.
