Charles Herbert Knight, a butcher, aged 47 (Mr >\ I). {'argent), wi)9 charged with having been intoxicated while in charge of ii car in Dyer's Pass road on the evening of August stli. 11-e pleaded not guilty Svhen the indictment was read, but later changed his plea to one of guilty. Oliief-Detective Carroll said that accused was driving liis car up Dyer's Pass road »t about 8.20 on the evening of August 6th, when he ran the front jvheels into tho gutter and laid to get assistance from passers-by. After some delay he backed out, and instead of going on up tho bill shot backwards acrosi the road and crashed into a shop-front on the other side. Another car had almost been capsized by his sudden movements. Detective Finla? had happened to be passing, and he had examined recused trnd had found him incapable ot driving. Theli, when the detective's back had been turned, accused had jumped into hie car and tried to escape. Evidence waß given ns to the conduct of Ihe accused at the time of the accident mid as fn his condition. "The incident, of course, was not as had as it might have been—'jut, it was bad enough," said the Magistrate. "I am quite cure accused was not in a fit condition to drive a motor-car." Knight was convicted and flned £lO and costs, and liiß license was suspended until September Ist, 1931. DRUNKENNESS. David Carol Watson, a second offender for drunkenness, was fined 20s costs, in default 48 hours' imprisonment.
