The French railways deficit for 1930 was £14,500,000. Judging by this halfyears returns it will bo £23,500,000 in 1931. In order to place the lines on an economic basis, it is proposed to raise fares 25 per cent., to close many stations, and to abolish certain local lines, substituting mo'or-omnibuses or light motor-vehicles using the railway lines. i
