The slow bowlers' averages suffered in consequence of Mercer's hitting. Merritt showed signs of a return to form. New Zealaud required 33 runs tor victory. Cromb was out Ibw with the total at six, but Allcott and Talbot obtained the necessary runs, Allcott hitting a six and two fours in one over from Turnbull. Scores: — GLAMORGAN. First Innings. A. 11. The team has now won five matches, lost two, and drawn 18 of the 25 so far played. Eleven fixtures remain on tho programme, Glamorgan, one of tho weakest of the first-class county teams, vvero completely outplayed, as they were in the former match which was interfered with by rain. The County men nevertheless made a good fight on the third day, and averted wjiat seemed a certain innings defeat. Mercer is not usually considered a batsman, but he sometimes comes to light with useful scores. His best Jast season was 55 against Yorkshire, this effort just enabling the Welsh County to take first innings points from their strong. opponents. * * * On tho present tour the wickettaking has been more evenly spread throughout the members of the team, although this was not the case in the earlier part of the programme, when Merritt was meeting with such remarkable success. This is not altogether desirable, for an attack consisting only of a number of good steady bowlers will not trouble the best batting sides The presence of a match-winning bowler u; essential to success. The announcement that Merritt showed something of a return to form is therefore most welcome, for with the possible exception of Cromb, the googly bowler is the only member of the side who appears capable of "running through" a good team.
