LIGHTHOUSE ROAD. •The top road, from Evans's Pass to. the Lighthouse, although closed to traffic, is quite usable, and this fact was evidenced when a car was scon there recently. A gate at tho entrance at Evans's Pass is padlocked, but evidently in this instance tho difficulty was ovorcome by lifting tho gate off the hinges. This road, although frequently used by t-rampers, is not so well known as it might be, and the very easy grade should be an incentive to its more frequent use. Gas Reticulation. To illustrate the damage caused to gas-pipes through contact with blue clay, a specimen of gas main taken from Estuary road, Redcliffs," was submitted to the Borough Council at its last meeting by the Gas and Electrical Engineer (Mr A. A. Cheshire). Corrosion was very evident, and if the sample shown by Mr Cheshire can be taken as a guide it seems that in parts of the borough extensive renewal of piping will -be required in a very short while. Rugby Football. -Last Saturday the Sumner Rugby Football Club's third grade team met and defeated Richmond by six points to three. Tries" were scored for Sumner by Manihera and Craig. Owing to the wind restricting concerted action by the backs the game was confined to the forwards. In : the first half, with the wind in their favour, Suinne'r scored two tries, both as a result of "concerted movements by. the forwards, who were superior to their opponents throughput the game. In the second half Sumner was on/ the defensive, but because of the local team's sound defence, Richmond were able to score only ono try. The fifth grade team won by eighteen points to three; Tries were "scored by Hawera, Long, Mathews, and Minogue, while Trevean kicked a fiold goal and' converted one try. To-day, at St. Leonard's square, the third grade team plays Linwood, who are leading in the competition. As the local side is playing well they should be able to extend their opponents.
