' ASHBURTON. gold mining applications adjourned. Applications for gold-mining rights for 42 years on the Ninety-Mile Beach, extending one mile by 500 feet each from the Taumuta Cemetery towards the Ralcaia river terrace, by Frederick W/ 1 * liaw Manton and Godfrey Magnus, merchants, of Wellington, came before the Warden's Court at Ashburton yesterday, when Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., presided. Mr F. W. Manton appeared in support of the applications. The Ellesmere County Council wrote objecting to the applications on the following grounds: Any interference with the shingle and sandbank and binding grasses would jeopardise the adjoining properties by allowing aeawater to flood during rough weather; the adjoining lands were in a special drainago area and were drained to sea-level by culverts through the bank; some of the lands affected were leased Crpwn lands; applications had been made for licenses previously, and in March, 1923, the Minister for Mines, members of the Council, and the landowners affected inspected the beach, and the Minister refused to grant licenses owing to the danger of flooding tho adjoining l&nd with sea-water. , The Minister in charge of Lrown Lands (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) telegraphed an objection on the grounds of the .probability of damage to Crown lands. - Mr Manton said that he had only, a sketch plan of the area. . The Warden: If the area exceeds 20 acres, you must have a plan certified by the Lands Survey Department. Mr Manton said that"a plan had been prepared originally, when his company had gone to expense amounting to about £IOOO for prospecting and had abandoned the scheme at that time.
