EUCHRE PARTIES STOPPED BY POLICE.
e : WOOLSTON LIBRARY'S EVENINGS. • Following ft visit by the police to th » last function, th» committee of the Woolston Public Library ha» been compelled 'to Abandon fortnightly euchre parties in. aid ofthe library funds. The eommittee h«a been advised that the partieamu£.tjsease or * prosecution wilT result. The parties were Held in the Druids* Hall, Woolston, the chairman l of the library's social committee told a representative of Th* Press yesterday, and prizes were competed fqr, their value never totalling more than about 255. Last Saturday evening a v policeman had appeared' and forbidden the holding of any 'more. Besides-pointing out'that it was unfair that the . ban. should be applied to Woolston when, other, organisations were being allowed \ to. carry on, the chairman of the r. social committee remarked that a number of the subscribers to, the library- were out of work and were being, carried on. by means of the funds mad&.at their euchre parties, which were almost the only satisfactory means of raising money. Every penny taken was psed for library purposes. Making the best of a bad job, th© committee proposes to hold-a combined euchre party and dance .nest-Saturday week, at which no prizes will be grfen. It is pointed out that, besides being less profitable;' this is jdso a. less satis-factory-method of raising money, as dances are more difficult to control lhan .the card tournaments.
