At the Weekly shoot of the St. Andrews Miniature Rifle Club, held in the ball on Monday night, there was an attendance of fcixteea members, in the shoot-off for a trophy given by Mr Taylor, C. The entries for the -forthcoming Waimate Winter Show show an increase on those of last year. The total in the poultry, pigeon, and canary classes is 389, compared with 360 last year; and canary entries have increased from 69 to 97 and pigeon entries from 12 to 32. Competition m the produce section is also greater. A veritable transformation has taken nlace at Victoria Park as a result ol the efforts of the unemployed, under the supervision of the borough gardener, Mr White. A wall garden lias been constructed, and a three-foot border edged with stones has been formed round the wall. The top of the terrace has been levelled and is ready to be sown down in grass, sufficient room being left for a flower border. The ttjrrac© is to bo ©xtended all round. When the work is completed Victoria Park will be one of the best sports grounds and parks for motorists in the Dominion. . This week the Waimate Boy Scouts are celebrating their twenty-first birthday, the first troop having been formed in Waimate in 1909, with Scoutmasters Georgo Adams and Newman R. Wilson in charge. Lieut.-Colonel H. C. Barclay was District Commissioner, his assistants being Messrs C. E. Breniner and Ernest Hassall. Since those days tho Scouts have had their ups and downs, but since 1917 interest in the movement has been fairly well sustained, added impetus being given in 1922 by the formation of bt. l aul 8 troop. This year a Wolf Cub pack was torro&d, and to-day, in addition to the 40 Boy Scouts in Waimate, there is a pack of 32 Wolf Cubs. Last evening an Old Scouts' night ..was held, loninht is set aside for parents night, and to-morrow for Scouts and Guides. On Sunday a church parade is to pe held, at which ex-Scouts and the committee will fdso be present.
TEMUKA. The proceeds, from Tuesday evening's special effort on behalf of the funds of the Organised Unemployed wore officially handed over to the Committeo of the Unemployed oh Wednesuay evening, when'conditions laid down by the Rev." Father J. E. Ainsworth, with regard to the disposal of the funds, were signed by Messrs F. C. Roberts and - A. D. Martin in the presence of the Committee and Father Ainsworth at the Roman Catholic Presbytery. Mr Roberts said he accepted the cheque with deep feeling, because it came at a time when the resources of the unemployed were very low. The matter had very simply at a meeting of the Unemployed Mens Committee, when it had been suggested that the committee approach Father J. Ainsworth to see if he would help to raise funds. Re had been approached, and with his fellow priest, Father J. Campbell, had agreed, without any hesitation, to take up the scheme. ' The fact that over 100 families would be able to benefit for seven or eight weeks would "be taken into _re gard. and he could assure Father Ainsworth and his, parish that the money would bo spent only on cases that really deserved help. 'I am pleased to have been able to help you It is a great pleasure to me and my parish." ■ • ■ . , Cards and dancing were the principal features of a social evening giver, by the Druids' Lodge in the Lodge rooms in High street last evening. Teams from Timaru were present by invitation. and return matches of cards were played in the early part of the evening. The Timaru ladies won the euchre aggregate bv 266 points to 263; and the Timaru men (94). beat lem"ka men '(89). Prizes in the competitions were won by the following:—Ladies—Mrs B. Smith (Timaru) first, Mrs G. Booth ;Timaru) second: Mrs B. Maclachlan (consolation). Men—Messrs C. Williams (Timaru) first, and Hughes (Timaru) consolation.

The weekly shoot of th© club 'took place on Monday evening, when the first round of the Herald Shield was fired. In this the club's best men failed to shoot up to form.
