NOTES OF THE DAY. [By Fx-agstick.] In tho not very distant' past when teams from the Otago and Christehurch Clubs met in their annual contests for tho Campbell-Hosking and Hanmer Shields, the fixture was practically an interprovinciai one, and though tho match cannot now claim that status — C. B. Wight of St. Clair could not be omitted from an Otago side, nor B. V. Wright, K. C. Ward, and J. Millard from a Canterbury oneI—tho 1 —tho standard of play tends to be increasingly higher, and the match to be contested with no less keenness; Tiiis year Otago had sent up a very strong side,' headed by its manytimes-charoipion, K. Ross, and including a number of young players of great promise. Their papain was in decidedly better form than he showed when playing in the matches of the Kirk-Wipdoyer series, and though W. 0. Wight, his partner ill tho foursomes, was unable on tp justify his place- on the list, the pair who toileted, J. Spence and J. A. Sequler, showed Borne accurate and attractive golf, especially in their tee shots and on the greens.. Being accustomed to rather fairways at Balroaeewan, they were never quite at home with their iron and mashie shots, and it was to their lack of confidence in hitting approaches to the pin that their defeat was due. Both lost their singles to_ A. B- Blank and 0. A. Seymour respectively, but in the afternoon foursome they held their opponents to the turn with a fine 37, and were not beaten till Farthest South was reached, G. Barnett, a former champion of Qtago, was the most successful of the visitors, defeating E. J". Pumphrey by a small margin in tho singles, and with Ij r .A. Eeed securing a lead of one hole over B. C. Abernethy and E. J. Pumphrey—the only wins for his side of the day.
The visiting captain had a ding-dong tussle jn his single against R. T. Tosswill, who, in tho absence of E. M. Macfarlane, had been promoted to first place on the home side, and who, except for one or two mistakes early in the day, played high-class golf throughqut. Tosswill had a'lead of two holes when three had been played, but tho Otago skipper took the next two and the tnaich remained square with a succession of halved holes to the turn. A seesaw period followed, any mistake by either being promptly turned to account by his opponent, the visitor's card for tho next six holes leading 4-5, 5-4, 5-4, 3-4, 4-5, 4-3—and the match was still square. A$ the pagoda tho Otago man was up the hill in rough with his thirfl, an£ emild not get the par #vej whereas TossVill, wijh his approach putt, missed-a "birdie" four by inches, only—rToßSwill - one up. At the seventeenth the home player again nearly Secured a "birdie," his ball lying an Inch or two from the cup, and Koss, having overrpn the hole, was partly stymied, but secured the half' with a nicely .judged putt. Going "all-out" for a win at the home hole, the visitor nearly reached the temporary green with his drive, but his chip approach was too strong, and the Christehurch man, who bad played a very accurate second to within six feet of the pin, had the like to play for a win. Ho played safe, and 1 made sure of a win for hi 3 side by halving in four.
The afternoon foursome between the top pairs—K. Boss and W. G. Wight for the visitors, and E. T. Tosswill and B. A. Wilson for Christehurch—was .equally well contested, though the golf at times was rather patchy. A gpod te'e-shot at Crossways by Tosswill gave his partner a chance for a 2, qM Wilson made no mistake with the putt, and similarly Wight's tee shot at Old Nick helped his side to a "birdie" 2, and par four 3to both at Shirley brought them all square to the sixteenth. Here Wight's tee-shot, short and slightly pulled, found a difficult lie up against the mound of a bunker. Tosswill's ball, a little straighter and longer, bounced twice on the top of a mound and rolled on to the green, pin-Jiigh. Boss got out well, but was short, and Wight's chip was also short, and the hole went to Christehurch, 3r5, making them one up. Wilson's drive to the Pagoda was long and , straight, • but Boss's was even longer—a splendid shot into a quartering wind, Their parttiers' seconds lfcft them level, and then the Otago captain, possibly mindful of his morning experience, played rather short, Wilson's ball lying -wide to tho right, but qti th© green. Wight' chipped too strongly, and Tosswill's run up was short, but Wilson holed a good'putt for a win, 5—6, making his side aormy. Tho seventeenth w as halved in par fours, Boss having played a particularly fine seeohd from an awkward lie. Christehurch two up and one to play. Driving to the eighteenth, WiWhoolced slightly to the left edge of the fatrwaV Boss with a pushed-out shot wa* almost pin-high, but close behind the mound of one of the bunkers of the first fairway- Wight played clear of trouble, leaving their ball still short of the green, but his partner recovered with a clever chip over an awkward rideo ' Tosswill meanwhile had played a fine approach to within three Wilson wiselv made sure of a half the trlckv green, and finally a go°d putt by Wight kept the balance of holes unchanged.
fhe ptago papiain had no adverse comment to make on tho co?)dition P h Shirley. When informed that wa s rife "didp't see what they M M that with normal rain« the course wowu
be la fine order for the championships in October. Tho grens certainly look in better shape than they did in MarchApril. Last week Mrs J. M. Preston, tho Avondale ladies' champion, played the Avondale course in a gross 80, the best round so far this season. Hor fine effort will have the effect of reducing licr handicap to six. Both the finalists in the Wilkin Chip at Shirley—Miss V. Fleming and Miss M. Beadel—had come through a severe test in tho preceding round, the former having won by a single holo from Mrs J. E. Donald, while Miss Beadel did not secure a win against Miss Norton til] after a re-play. Miss Beadel has lately been showing some golf worthy of her fine record, but on Monday, when the final was played, she was decidedly off her game, and when her* opponent won at the Pagoda she had needed only ono of the three handicap strokes allowed her. Miss Fleming was in the lead all the way, and at the turn stood four up with 42 for the nine holes. Her best hole was Maireliau, which she won in 4-5 without her handicap stroke. On tho remaining holes the play was moro even, but Miss Fleming, with a stroke, had a win at 0 'Rorke's and stood five up after a half at the Pines. The leader then struck trouble at two holes in succession, where at the same time Miss Beadel played' some of her best golf of the round —Miss Fleming three up with four to play. A half at Farthest South made Miss Fleming dormy, and at tho long sixteenth a fine brassie third lay almost dead. With a handicap stroke she could not fail to win, the match ending there, 4 and 2. The winner is now playing on a handicap of ten, and recent performances suggest that she is likely to go still lower before the season closes.
Before these notes appear next week we should have had by cable an account of the play in the Ryder Cup match at Columbus, Ohio. The' Scioto Club's course, where the matches will be decided, is a fairly long one of some 6700 yards, and as a watering scheme has been provided for all the fairways, it may be presumed that it will play its full length. On the whole, the precepts of the strategic school have been followed in the bunkering, many of the greens, especially at the longer holes, having ready access from one quarter only, while sand-traps are not excessive in number. The par of the course is 71, a figure that will be hard to attain in any weather, and if the weather is rough some very in-and-out results may be expected, and some "sporting" finishes. Probably more of the contestants will como to grief at the short 17th than at any of the longer holes. Th shot is one of only 135 yards, but the green is tiny, apd bounded on one side by a water hazard and on three more by sand-traps. There are three more par 3 holes of lengths varying from 150 to 240 yards, and three par 5 holes, of which the longest skirts the boundary, so that the out-of-bounds danger threatens »11 the way, especially as the green ppena towards the right-hand edge -of the fairway. The National Open was hold here in 1926, but since then the course has been largely' remodelled.
NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIP. NEW ZEALANDER DEFEATED. (USITKB PBJtSB 13S0CU«0*—BT BLECTBTC TEWSOB4IME—COSTBIGHT.) (Beceived June 25th, 7.15 p.m.) • SYDNEY, June 25. E. L. Apperly, holder of the title, rather easily defeated the New Zealander, H. A. Black, in the semi-final of the State Amateur Golf Championship to-day, eight up and eevpn to play. who hail shown excellent form in the present series, gave nothing away over the first eighteen holes anc), aided by a couple of styjpies, had a lead of five up at luncheon. Black mad® several mistakes on the greens. He was a trifle unfortunate at the fourteenth, for with a win in sight, he was stymied, and in a gallant effort to negotiate it with a niblick, ho knocked his opponent's ball into the hole. The New Zealander sank a 30 feet putt on tha twelfth green, but was too often shoffc with approach putts. The result was that he gave 4pp®*"ly many pppprfcunities which naturally >verp not qugseg. Black was never in tha 'picture m the afternoon- Apperly relied on steady methods and always fiad the New Zealander on the defensive. In the other semi-final match J. F'erricr beat "W. It. Dobson, two and one.
