NORTH CANTERBURY.
♦ RANGIORA. The monthly meeting of the Itangioia High School Board was held on Tuesday evening, the chairman, Mr C. I. Jennings, presiding. Apologies were received for tho absence of sevcial members, and a motion was passed expressing sympathy with Mr • A. Banks in his illness. Correspondence was received from the Education Department stating that it could not approve of a grant oi £l5O for expenditure on school lockers. The Department, however, approved of a grant of £'2o for gates and £7 7s Gd for science equipment. A ( special grant of £3O for completion of the baths was also made by the Director for Education. Tho Town Clerk wrote notifying tho Board that the Mayor, Mr W. A. Itowso, had been appointed the representative of the borough on the Board. The treasurer's statement for the month showed receipts to have been £659 and expenditure £568 9s 2d, the bank balance being £460 15s. Accounts for payment totalled £2lO lis 4d, The statement was received. Mr J. E. Straclian, Rector of tho High School, brought up several matters needing attention, all of which were referred to the various committees to attend to. In presenting his report for the past month, Mr Campbell, tho agricultural instructor, stated that on the farm half the cows had been dried off, and that all cows and young stools; were being led on roots and liav. It was intended to grass harrow all pastures, paddocks, and lucerne very thoroughly. Harrowing would bo followed in certain paddocks by topdtessing for early spring grass. AH cows have been tattooed by tho Herd Testing Association for identification purposes. Ono breeding sow has been purchased and it is desirable that two more should lie purchased. On tho mixed farm, the report stated that the potato crop was not up to expectations. Tho mangolds yielded 15 tons to tho aero nnd tho swede crop was considerably better than expected. Experiments were still being carried out with wheat The Agricultural Department oflicers had already sown a manurial trial on wheat. Tho report concluded by proposing that a letter of thanks and appreciation he forajfirded to tho superintendent and his staff of the fields division, Christehurch. The report was adopted. WAIAU. The annual meeting of the Waiau sub-branch of tho Plunket Society was held on Saturday afternoon, when Mrs H. Dampier-Crossley presided over a good attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet, which were adopted as read, showed tho sub-branch to bo in a flourishing condition, the credit balance being £77 7s Bd. The visiting nurse reported that sho had mado twelve visits during the year, and that eho had received visits from 56 mothers, 59 babies, and 21 older children. She had also mado 28 visits to private homes. Ladv Hosking gave an interesting address on the inception and growth of the Society. MacfaHane, H. W. D. Rogers, and Lady Hosking. At the close of tho meeting, those present were entertained at afternoon tea bv the president. On Saturday a successful linre-drive. organised bv E P. H. Burbury. was held over "Lottery Downs ' and "Sherwood." the properties of Mr D. McLean and Mr E. P. TT. Burburv | resnectivelw Twontv-five guns participated in the drive, and as hares were fairlv plentiful a flood day's snort was obtained, tho bacr being over 100 hares. On Tuesday afternoon members of llie Waipara-jOmihi Plunket Society met to hid farewell to three of their valued members, Mrs Loe, who is leaving for Ivaikoura, Mrs Cairns, who is leaving for Scotland, and Mrs Fuchs for Christchurcli. Mrs Cameron (president) presided, and presented Mrs Loe and Mrs Cairns/ each with a travelling rug, and Mrs Fuchs with a leather hand-bag. Mrs Loe and Mrs Cairns returned thanks and Miss Fuchs responded oil behalf of her mother, who was unable to be present.. Musical items, which were much enjoyed. were given by Mrs Blake, Mrs Giennie (accompanist), Misses P. McGuckin, J. Ferguson, J. Kilty, B. Potton, and P. Symonds. A vote of thanks was passed to the performers. CUST. The monthly meeting of the Cust and West Eyre ton Branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Masonic Refectory on Monday, Mrs 11. Tallott presiding. Mrs H. Tallott moved motion of sympathy with Mrs R. Gardner in the loss of her husband. Mr Gardner had been a member of the advisory board from the beginning ot this branch of the Society. All members stood as a mark of sympathy. Mrs Tallott (president) welcomed the new members of the committee. The nurse's report was adopted. The local football club held a smoke concert in the Oddfellows Hall on Monday evening, the occasion being to bid farewell to Mr J. Vucetich, who is leaving the district. During the evening, Mr J. Pickering, on behalf of the club, presented Mr Vucetich with a wallet LINCOLN. in-spite of the weather there was a fair number present at the weekly social organised by the Public Hall Committee in aid of hall funds. Competitions were won by Miss Gladys Bennett and Mrs Moran, and Mr T. Modlin and Mr A. Ford. The Lincoln Tennis Club Committee met on Monday last, Mr W. Hopley presiding. Tho secretary reported tliat the contractor had promised to have the surface of the court finished this week. Tho club has waited some time now to have the erection of the fence done under the No. 5 Scheme, but the opinion was expressed that the fence should be immediately erected. Arrangements were made to have the work put in hand not later than July sth. The committee hopes to have all iu order for playing in August. GOVERNOR'S BAY. On Tuesday morning a strong southwester blew up, preceded by a heavy forcing rain, which was continuing at, midday yesterday. In the short time much rain has fallen and done some severe damage to culverts, one in Governor's Bay having fallen in on one side of the road, There have been one
or two falls, of snow, but as the ground is so warm it has not had a chance to settle. Many big branches were blown from the trees during the night, when the storm was at its height. The electric light service failed soon after the weather changed. The fruitgrowers in the Bays have been kept busy the last few weeks pruning and spraying their trees. Good ci ops are anticipated; -Mrs N.j Blair, ofGovernor's Bay, wlio- met with an accident early last yeek, is now out. of tlangev and on tha way to recover/.
