EXEMPTION PROM AWARD.
. . —— PRIVATE HOTELKEEPER'S APPLICATION REFUSED. In the Arbitration Court yesterday afternoon an application was heard to strike out as a party to the Private Hotel Employees' Award Mrs C., Al. YValker, boarding-house keeper, of Akaroa. On the bench were,Mr Justice Frazer, Mr W. Cecil Prime (employers' representative) and Mr A. Ij. Monteitb (employees' representative). The application was supported by Mr J. 11. Cuningham, for Mrs Walker, and opposed by Mr 11. A Brookes, on behalf of the union. Mr Cuninghaui said that the . board-ing-house was carried on with the aid of°Mrs Walker's two daughters-. Mrs ""Walker herself doing all the cooking During the summer months she had on one occasion employed a girl, aged 16, and had paid her the award rate. Her difficulty was that whenever she wanted help of any kind, even for dish-wasti-Lng for which she could employ a vouu (r , inexperienced girl, she had to pay the full rate of 32s 6d a week. Mr Brookes pointed out that there had been no objection raised when Mrs Walker had been "added as a party. "This is-not a case in which exemption from the award can be granted," said his Honour. 'lt is only during the summer months that she requires any extra help can't see any reason why she should not come under the same terms as anyone else during that .short period. The application must be refused.
