New Brighton, on Monday, June Bth he found, that the plates were thoso used last year, biit with the distinguishing circles punched in and a raised star added, in con formity. with the type of plate now in use. The old plates had not been painted, how ever, as those were which figured in a case heard at the Magistrate's Court on Monday. Frank Levy, the rider of the motor-cycle, was before the Court yesterday charged with failing to produce a driver's licensq, and with riding an unlicensed motor-cycle. Inspector Blewitt described accosting* Levy, and finding that the number-plates affixed to his machine were last year's, and hud been defaced. Levy's explanation was that he had takon the! old plates off his machine some timo ago and had not re-registered. Recently a young man had come to him and offered to demonstrate how the old platos could be changed to resemble the authorised plates for tho present year. lie had allowed this to be done, and had then given the plates to « child to play with. On the date of the charge he had wanted <o go to Now Brighton, but had not had the monoy to register the machine or to pay tram fares. He had then fixed the defaced plates to the motorcycle, thinking that it would be less of a crime to ride with these than without plates. Ho pointed out that had he intended any fraud he would have painted the plates in tho colour of those usod at present. "I have a duty to perform, in the way of preventing other people from doing this," replied the Magistrate, Mr 11. P.
