A NEW ZEALAND TRADE MARK.
DESIGNS SUBMITTED. MANUFACTURERS' DISCUSSION, i The question of whether or not New Zoalarul manufacturers' should make use of a Dominion trade mark to distinguish their goods was again discussed at last night's meeting of tlic executive of tl 10 Canterbury Manufacturers' . Association. Mr A. M. Hollander suggested that instead of endeavouring to select a New Zealand trade mark an emblematical design should be uaed. He submitted two designs executed by ISlr V. Evans, which embraced the letters N.Z., and which he suggested should be used in connexion with the Government's publicity campaign for secondary industries. Mr F. L. Hutchinson said that it was essentia] that the words "Made in New Zealand" should be used, otherwise people would not know that the goods offered them were manufactured in the Dominion. : Mr F. W. J. Bolton commended Mr j Hollander's suggest ion, stating that the designs had distinctive characteristics. Mr Hollander moved that photographic copies of the designs be sent to the- Associations in the other three centres, asking the in to see that the matter was given due publicity. Mr Belton seconded the motion, and in doing so said that the designs were so characteristic that they immediately suggestod New Zealand and rendered tho words "Made in New Zealand" quite superfluous. Mr J. W. Thomas said that it was necessary to impress on buyers that goods were manufactured in the Dominion. He was afraid that it would be too easy for an outside manufacturer to copy tho designs. Mr 11. Bradley complimented Mr Evans on his designs, which he thought should be adopted by the Association. Mr V. Evans said that in arriving at the designs he had had to avoid using fern leaves or kiwis, which had been used on so many other occasions. On the motion of Mr W. A. Bascand it was decided that tho Federation be requested to withhold the adoption of the trade mark, as the Canterbury Association had something better which it would like to submit. Mr Hollander's motion was also put and carried. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Evans for the trouble he had gone to in preparing the designs.
