STATE ADVANCES.
NEW SUPERINTENDENT. MR E. O. HALES APPOINTED. [THE TSESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, May 23. The Prime Minister (the lit. Hon. 6. W. Forbes) announced to-day the appointment of Mr E. O. Hales to succeed Mr W. Waddel, C.8.E., wlioee retirement at his own request from the position of Superintendent of State Advances was previously notified, and who will cease active duty as from the end of the present month. Mr Hales at present holds the position of Assistant Public Trustee, a position which he haa occupied Since <,921. In this position Mr Hales has had a wide experience in financial matters, and has acted as a member of the State Advances Board and the Boards of other lending Departments of State. Mr Hales is a son of Mr W. H. Hales, formerly Ehgineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department. He was educated at Wellington College, and joined the head office of the Public Trust Office as a cadet on December 1£t,189-i. Since then he has passed through all branches of the office, and has filled the positions of inspector in the head office, local De-puty-Public Trustee at Dunedin, and local Deputy-Public Trustee at Auckland. He has been closely identified with sport of various kinds, having represented the Wellington province both as a cricketer and as, a Rugby footballer. At one time he held for Borne years the positions of chairman of tho Wellington Rugby Union and committeeman of the- New Zealand Rugby Union.
