COAL IMPORTS.
MINISTER'S STATEMENT. NO DEPARTURE FROM POLICY. A deputation from the United Mine Workers of Now Zealand will wait upon the Prime Minister, the Bt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, in Wellington to-day in reference to the importation of coal from Australia. This information was given to a reporter laßt evening by the Minister for Railways, tlio Hon. W. A. Veitch. He said that the order placed in the Commonwealth was for slightly more than 30,000 tons, and he did not think it would "bo necessary to increase the quantity. "It is intended to make up the short orders from the New Zealand mines," said the Minister. "The Railway Department has given a number of orders to New Zealand companies which produce hard coal suitable for storage, but a measurement of our supplies disclosed a shortage in the resorves, and in consequence fresli orders have been placed with the West Coast mines, and arrangements have been made for the supply of certain quantities from Australia to enable us to build up again to a reasonable amount. "Orders placed in the Dominion did not come to hand as they should have, so the Department was compelled to look elsewhere. "There is no intontion of departing from the policy o£ using New Zealand coal, but under the circumstances we had no other choice."
