GANG OF RUFFIANS.
SENSATIONAL ACTIVITIES. (UNITED PEB3B ASSOCIATION —FT ELECTBIO TELEOfIAPn—COPVEtOHT.) (Received April 29th, 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 28. To-day's activities of Jack Diamond's gangsters reached sensational proportions. ' While their leader's physicians expressed doubt as to whether he will live, despite his present survival with bullets in the liver, lung, head, and throat, a group of ruffians, presumably wishing to make up for Jack's indictment for beating a man in an effort to make him reveal details of his cider trade, seised the latter apd gave him a second serious beating. Shortly afterr wards others dragged the victim's son from a motor-car and hanged him to a tree, from which, however, he escaped and spread the alarm. The Governor of New "York, Mr Franklin D. Roosevelt, gave orders to the police and State troopers to the effect of a "complete clean up of tho gang." , Residents of the neighbourhood m Diamond's Catskill mountain stronghold have formed groups of vigilants in an attempt to drive the criminals from the area. The latter, however, apparently intend to give considerable battle before dropping their profitable "Apple Jack" bootleg business. They are organised in what is ironically called the "driest" portion of New York Sttae. The police, however, have arrested five alleged members of Diamond's group. They found the motor-car from which Jack Diamond was shot. This contained an arsenal of shotguns, revolvers, and daggers made from needlepointed ice picks. [On October 12th last year the notorious racketeer, Jack Diamond, was found lying on the floor of an hotel with three bullets in tois body and One in the head. He was rushed to the hospital, and was not expected to live. In addition he had been kicked and manhandled, suffering broken ribs and a paralysed arm. Moreover, the doctors said he also suffered from tuberculosis. Diamond, however, showed such amazing vitality that a detective guard aj; his bedside (there had been a rumour that gangsters would bomb the hospital) predicted that the wounded man "would be walking out of the hospital soon on one hand."]
