PROVINCIAL TOURNEY. MATCHES FOR TO-DAY. The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's annual provincial championship tournament will commence at Wilding Park this morning at nine o'clock. With all the leading Christcliurch players numbered among the entrants the tourney will be a most interesting one, even though there are no formidable contenders for titles from outside Canterbury. Angas has dominated Canterbury tennis for the past few years, but his recent defeats show that in his present form he is by no means invincible, and ho is likely to bo fully extended in what promise to be some excellent and keenly-contested exhibitions. Twelve grass courts will bo in uso for the tourney to-day, although extra courts may be requisitioned for the junior events. They are likely to be slow to-day as a result of the heavy rain, and it was not until late yesterday that the groundsman (Mr H. Haile) was able to work on them. They are in splendid condition. , Competitors in the first round of the men's and women's singles events and one or two of the second round men will be required to attend punctually at nine o'clock this morning. Any player failing to be ready to play when called upon will be scratched. Lunch will bo available at the park, and there will bo no adjournment. The finals are scheduled to bo played on Saturday afternoon. In a first-round gamb of the men's singles last evening B. A. Barrer defeated E. D. Brougliton, 6-4, G-0.
