SUMNER ITEMS.

PERSONAL. The friends of Mr C. J. Kite will be pleased to hear that he has left the hospital after his recent operation and is now making satisfactory progrcss towards recovery. Miss Kathleen Thomas (Wellington) will return home next week, after spending a holiday with her father, Mr Thomas, Richmond avenue. Mr and Mrs C. E. Eoweraker and their family are staying at Clifton. Mr and Mrs J. E. Hill and their family, Pc'verel street, Riccarton, are staying in Bury street. Band Concert. The programme for to-morrow afternoon 's band concert will be played by Derry's Military Band, beginning at 3 p.m. It is hoped that a return visit will be made on iJecember 28th and possibly also later in the season. The programme is as follows:—March, "Dunedin" (Alford); fox trot, "A Little Kiss" (Crizel); selection, "Maritana " (Wallace); romance, "Chant Sans Paroles" (Tchaikowsky); trombone solo, "Serenata" (Toselli), soloist, Bandsman P. Barsby; waltz, "Thoughts" (Alford); selection "Country Girl" (Monckton); march, "On the Quarterdeck'' (Alford); "God Save the King." Miniature Golf Opening. The opening of the new miniature golf course, situated between Grafton street and the Esplanade, will take place this afternoon at 3 p.m. Tho Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson) ivill perform the ceremony. A Popular Officer. When Constable W. J. Hampton relinquishes his duties at Christmas time, Sumner will lose the services of an efficient and popular officer. Hi 3 length of service in the borough, twenty-nine years, must be a record in the New Zealand police force. After a short period of office work he was appointed to Sumner and the wisdom of the choice was reflected in his long term of office in the one borough, and his great popularity. For many years he has been associated with a number of the local sports bodies, in his younger days as a member of the Sumner Cricket Club and of latter years with the Sumner Bowling Club, of which he is one of the foremost members. On his retirement Constable Hampton intends to go north for a holiday, and later will return to the borough, where he will make his home.

The Gala. ! At a special meeting of the Sumnor Civic Federation on Wednesday evening it was decided to call a public meeting very shortly for the purpose of forming a committee to run the proposed gala. The Federation wishes it to be understood clearly that although it has promoted the idea of a gala and has invited representatives of various sports bodies to attend the meeting, the presence of any residents who are interested in the project will be gladly welcomed. "When a committee has been elected from this meeting, its first duty will be to decide on a suitable date and since tho time remaining between now and Christmas is rather short, it is considered that a suitable date could be decided upon towards the end of January. This would enable the better completion of preliminary arrangements, and would be suitable for school children before their return to school. Athletic Club. The Athletic Club's second meeting will be held in St. Leonard's square on Thursday evening next, at 6.30. The following programme has been arranged in which points will be scored for the Brown Cups:—Primary girls, 100 yards; primary boys, 100 yards; ladies, 100 yards, hop, step, and jump; iunior men, 100 yards, 220 yards; senior men, 100 yards, 220 yards, hop, step, and jump. All the events will be handicapped. Every club member is requested to compete, and a cordial invitation is extended to those interested in the club. Borough. Picnic. The following circular has been forwarded to all the local bodies and signed by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson):— "At a public meeting held on Tuesday evening last in connexion with the borough picnic it was unanimously resolved that your Association be requested to appoint representatives to act on the committee in making arrangements for this year's picnic. "The date of the first meeting of the

committee has been fixed for Wednesday, December 10th, in the committee room of the Council Chambers at 7.45 p.m. It is hoped that all organisations in the borough will do their best to ensure the success of our annual picnic which is looked forward to by such a large number of residents and their families." Bowling. The results of the various club competitions to date aro as follows: — I Handicap singles—First round: Mulholland 2, beat Neville 3. Championship singles—Second round: Stoneman beat Neville. Third round: Williams a bye, Stoneman beat Menzies, Forrest beat Wilson, Thomas beat Peck, Hampton beat Bates, Edwards beat Johnson. Championship pairs—First round: Mitchell and Barlow beat Peck and Dalziel. Second round: Hampton and Stoneman beat Thomas and Menzies. Third round: Thomas and Menzies beat Edwards and Williams; Hampton and Stoneman beat T. W. Johnson and Topping. Championship rinks—Second round: Thomas, Menzies, Neville, and Clarke beat E. A. Johnson, Mitchell, Graham, and Ussher. The draw for the fourth round of the championship singles is as follows: Stoneman, 1 life, plays Martin, 2 lives; Peek, 1 life, plays Hampton, 2 lives; Thomas, 2 lives, plays Edwards, 2 lives; Williams, 1 life, plays Forrest 1 life. Burgesses' Association. A meeting of the Burgesses' Associaition, which members are invited to attend with their friends, is being held this evening in the committee room of the Sumner Town Hall. The election of officers will take place and general business will be discussed. Mr A. J. Scott has given notice to move: "That a sub-committee be set up to report upon the advantage to be gained by the amalgamation of the | Sumner borough and the Heathcote county." | It is understood that Mr Scott lias prepared a statement of the financial ■ aspect of the proposal, which will be of interest to Sumner ratepayers. The response to the efforts of the School Committee, which last week hold a bazaar, was so excellent that the sum of £lO2 was raised, and although big sums have been raised in the past this amount exceeded the promotors' expectations. Cricket. The following will represent the Sumner Club this afternoon: —Third grade v. St. Albans, at St. Leonard's square: —D. M. Bichardson, L. Newton, C. Merry, W. Yates, H. Odell, E. Merritt, D. Bowman, K. G. Shrimpton, A. Trevean, P. Christianson, and E. Stoneman. The following will play for the sixth grade team this afternoon: —Collins, Shand (2), MacLaclilan, Chitty, Stevens, Crawshaw, Duff, Longuet, Anderson, Cooper, Buchanan, and McNatty. In the match against Old Boys', the third grade team lost by 29 runs on the first innings. Sumner made 137 and 130 (Newton 49, Bowman 23, Christianson 21), and Old Boys' 166 and 65 for six wickets. Yates was the best bowler for Sumner. Sumner Public Library. A meeting of the selection committee of the Sumner Public Library was held on Thursday evening. Present were Mr S. Barber, Mesdames W. H. Nicholson, Fountain Barber, H. J. Marriner, and W. H. Brown, and Misses K. Selby and Willett. I The monthly selection of books was made and the work of cataloguing and numbering proceeded with. In view of the approaching holidays it was decided to meet on Monday evening to consider extra new books. Sumner Good Templars. The usual weekly meeting of the Sumner Good Templars was held in the Methodist Sunday School Hall. Bro. T. Turland, acting-C.T., presided. Two new members were initiated. The superintendent thanked all for their sports meeting and expressed his regret at their not winning the cup or the championship. All had done their best and had done it well. To-day the Band of Hope sports would be held in the Christchurch Domain on the sports ground, by the Tea Kiosk, at 1.30 p.m. A gift man would be present for the children. The superintendent aiso asked members wishing to join the Junior Lodge to enter their names on the application form with the S.J.W. at a fee of one shilling a quarter. Meetings for the future would be held &t 7 p.m.
