THRIFT IN SCHOOLS.
It is gratifying to note ("The Times' l Education Supplement says) tliat, in spite of the continued industrial depression, an increasing salo of National Savings Certificates is reported. At the present rato of investment it, is expected that the 1,000,000,000t1a certificate will be sold within the next lour months, probably tit the third or fourth week in January. The regional conferences of the National Savings Committee, which arc held annually in various parts the country about September or October of tho year, bring prominently before tlio public the virtues of thrift and Rive a fair indication of popular tendencies ill the direction of thrift. There are now savings associations in more than half the elementary schools of the country, and in almost half the secondary schools. Many public schools are also giving active support to the movement, and have set up associations. Vhe support of tho public schools is largely due to the appeal made last rear by the Duke of York, in which he said: "ft is most necessary that the youth of the nation, who may be t-alled upon to lead in the luture, should be trained to possess the right outlook on thrift and extravagance and acquire the attitude of mind that tvill best serve them if they are to fulfil their duties adequately.'' The increased interest of the public schools Jn the national savings movement also makes itself felt in other walks of life by reason, of the great number of public school men who now devote part of their leisure time to social service.
