Tiie annual mooting oi' the Cobden Swimming anil Hurling <' lit 1 > was held last evening at Cobden, Mr F. W. Baillie presiding over a large attendance. The balance-sheet and the annu.-.l report wore read and adopted. Mr Baillie congratulated the club on its fine achievement in winning the challenge cup given by J. Burns :iml Co. to the local club gaining most points in the Ts'cw Zealand championship carnival. Special mention was made ot' the club's relay to tun, which put up the line performance of winning six of the races in which it competed nt Ifeet'ton, Eunanga, Ilokitika, and Greymouth. Tho election of officers for the 193031 season resulted: —President, Mr T. Gillooly; vice-presidents, Messrs Gilmore, Ramage, Cochrane, Ate Kane, Barrett, Jones. Baillie were appointed delegates to the West Coast Centre. Tire at Reefton. Au outbreak of tire was discovered in a loft at U. W. Robertson's stables, at Iteefton, last night.. The tiro brigade was quickly on the scene and subdued tho blaze. The damage was slight. County Council. The Grey County Council met to-day. Present —Crs. W. T. Ogilvio (chairman), H. G. Carter, A. Blair, A. liobinson, J. Byall, A. McDonnell, J. Mulcare, and A. Donncllan. The Treasury advised payments to the County fund: Goldtields revenue, £4l-1 Us Id; public works, £B3 4s; Main Highways and Government grants, ;C3(iU4. The Main Highways Board forwarded authority for £SOO, on it £2 for £1 basis towards the Grcy-Omoto road improvements. The Town Clerk, Eltliam, forwarded a proposed scheme for the relief of unemploy"ieilt* It was resolved that the letter be held over till next meeting. The Town Clerk, Eunanga, wrote asking the Council's co-operation in stopping the wilful destruction of traffic signs on the Grey-Westport road. It was resolved that the county engineer should inspect, and apply for a grant to the Minea Department. The engineer reported having received a protest from the Barrytown private telephone subscribers complaining that the public telephone line was being erected and was interfering with their line, lie had inspected the lines and found the protest justified. He had therefore seen the telegraph overseer on the site and had received his assurance that the matter would be put in order. The engineer was instructed to inspect Branch road, Point Elizabeth, and to have necessary repairs carried out. The engineer reported that he had advised the Highways Board that the work of tar-sealing the Paroa road would be curried out at the end of this year and the beginning of next year.

Magistrate's Court. A sit t ing of the Magistrate'a Court was held to-day at Ilokitika. Mr \V, Meldruui, 8.M., presided. C. H. Gutlirey was charged with failing to stop when crossing the railway lino at Park street when the line wan not clear. lie, pleaded guilty. A fine of us, with costs 10s, was imposed. John Stuart was charged with driving across Weld street crossing at a speed exceeding fifteen miles an hour, and with crossing the line when it was not clear. He pleaded guilty, stating that ho had crossed the line at a slow pace. He was fined os, with costs. For approaching the intersection of Hampden and Fitzherbert streets in a motor-car at an excessive speed, J. G. Musgrovc (Mr Elcock) pleaded guilty, and was fined Cs, with costs. W. D. McKay, Truant Officer, charged J. Tainui with failure to send his child to school. Defendant was fined ss, with costs 12s. Robert Stuart, who did not appear, was ordered to pay £49 arrears at the rate of £.2 per month; in default one month's imprisonment.

Borough Council. The Greymoutli Borough Council met this evening. Present: Mr J. W. Greenslade (Mayor), Crs. A. M. D. Carroll, J. B. Kent, C. Gleeson, J. McGurley, E. Williams, G. Perotti, J. S. Robertson, and F. A. Kitcliingham. Tho Medical Officer for Health, Christchurch, wroto regarding the nuisance caused by an old creek bed at the southern end of the town. He said that tho liability to correct the evil was with the Borough Council. He also for%varded a suggested set of by-laws to govern such matters. The Mayor stated the residence referred to had been built nineteen years ago, therefore the presont Council could not be blamed. Tho res'dents interested had been asked to contribute to the cost of proper drainage, but they had refused. It was resolved to carry out tha Health Officer's suggestion, and ask the householders to abate the nuisance. It was resolved that tho General Committee should remodel the borough by-laws with a view to bringing them up to present-day requirements. Tho Medical Officer of Health wrote drawing attention to the nuisance being created, and asking tho Council to advise him when he had given authority for the dump. Ho asked that the dump be properly attended to. All vegetables and other noxious matter must be covered with earth. The Mayor .said that the Borough Enginer was doing his best to control the position, and what was now an eyesore would later on become a beauty spot. The matter was referred to the ongineer and the Works Committee to report to next meeting of tho Council.
