THE WAIMAKARIRI.

SUBSIDING AFTER THREAT OF FLOOD. Following a heavy downpour of rain overnight at Arthur's Pass, the Waimakariri river yesterday rose to sft above normal at White's bridge and threatened to flood. By last evening, however, the river had subsided by more than 6in, and there appeared to be little dafifger of it overflowing its banks.

The rainfall at the Pass for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday was 5.93 in, and the downpour continued during the day. By 11 a.m. the Waimakariri was sft above normal. By 2 p.m. the level had decreased 4ft 6in and kept steady for the rest of the day. A report from the Waimakariri River Trust's construction camp last evening stated that there had been no damage to the protective works and that the river was now falling. The river overflowed on to the road at Coutts Island, but did not make it impassable for jaotQr-tr&@<w
