THE SYNOD.

YESTERDAY'S SESSION. . EDUCATION BOARD ELECTED. The Synod of the Diocese of Christchurch continued in session yesterday. Dean ; J.;A. Julius presided. The report of the .Select Committee set up to examine the reports of the Standing Committee, and of the Church Property Trustees, expressed regret that .contributions to the Home Mission Fund this year showed a decrease of £sl. Consequent upon this the children's grants had been reduced by about 60 .per cent., and for the present year, the grant was only one quarter of that for 1927-28. ■ In view of the fact that the minimum stipend of clergy was fixed at a 1 sum which made- no provision for children, the committee was strongly of the opinion that children's grants should be paid to all clergy having children under 15- years old. Three More Scholarships. The Johannes Lohse Scholarship Trust Fund was in such a favourable condition that three additional scholarships were available this year for daugh ters of clergy. It was , also recommended in place of the present .arrangement, whereby payments were made to four Arch deacons, _ three of whom were busy .'parish priests, that the amount thus expended should be given to one Archdeacon, who should be freed from parish duties, and thus be enabled to give undivided attention to important matters —both spiritual and temporal—in the various parishes of the diocese. The report was received, * Elections. The following four Church Property Trustees were elected: Messrs W. C. Bean, C. J. .Ronaldson, T; F. Gibson* and T. J. Malmg. ' Messrs S, W. Jameson, T. J. Maline and S. McMurray were elected members of the Clergy Pension Trust Board The following were elected to the Diocesan Board of Education: The Revs S. Parr, H_ W. Monaghan, J. Galwey, F. B.
