DIALECTIC SOCIETY.
--- —♦——- CANTERBURY COLLEGE. Impromptu and open speaking competitions were held at the meeting of the Canterbury College Dialectic Society on Saturday evening. There was an attendance oi over 30 members. Professor L. G. Pocock was chairman and Dr. A. L. Haslain judged tile speaking. -There were seven speakers in the open competition, the subject being "The Ideals For Which Civilisation is Fighting." The topic was treated from varying standpoints, and - in giving his judgment Dr. Haslarn complimented the speakers on their generally high standard. He suggested, that some, however, were inclined to use rather flowery language and involved sentences. Mr *. Milner was placed first, Mr E. K. Cook second, and Mr C. F. Jones third. In the impromptu speaking ten members gave humorous treatments of a variety of subjects. Mr Milner was placed first in this section also, his •subject being "Amy Johnson." Other. speakers were Misses D. Maginness, "Skiins v. Deerstalking"'; C. Twvneham, "College Tea Rooms": G. Wilkiiis. "Skating": Messrs R. A. 11. Burton, "Platonic. Friendship" : W. Ml Brookes, "Mvself"; C. S. Perry, "Electric Power':.. A. G. Baigent, "Plus. Fours" ;• E. K. • Cook, "£SOOO in Tatte" ; and J. E. Farrell, "Petting Parties."'
