MASKED MAN ARRESTED

AUCKLAND, September 20
Shortly before midnight last night, ii masked mnn was arrested in tho dnorway of a shop in Karanguhape road, and an investigation of the premises showed that the front door window had been smashed near the lock. Tho man made n dash to escape, but was stopped by the nightwntchmdn and a police sergeant. The arrested nan was Patrick Gunn, aged 35, who was charged at the Magistrate's Court this morning with attempting to break end enter the office of H. L. 'White, Ltd., motor engineers, with intent to commit a crime.
The nightwatdhmnn on the prcmisoa was making hi* round about midnight when he found that a window in the front door had been smashed. He immediately called in the police, and with a sergeant went in next door to ring up the detective office. They could not get'through from the first telephone they tried, and they loft the shop to. try elsewhere. While passing the front of H. L. Whito'e office, they bhw (somebody in the doorway, He was immediately arrested. This is the second time this week that Whita'B establishment has been tampered with by prowlers. Last Wednesday evening someone got into tho shop and smashed open the till, taking a few shillings in cash with him. When Gunn appep.rod before Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M., Mr Sullivan for bail after the Chief-Detec-tive had applied for a remand until September 27th. , Chief-Detective Hammond: Gunn wus caught attempting to break into White's offioe last night. He was wearing a mask. He represented that he was a sleeping partner in the firm. He is nii habitual rriinirtnl, out on license.
"Under those circumstances, I refuse bail," said the Magistrate.
