TIMARU. THE WEATHER. i Variable wealher waß expcrifcneed in Timaru during the week-end. Although bright and fine oh Saturday morning, steady rain fell in the afternoon arid evening. Similar conditions prevailed yesterday. Sir Otto Niemeyer. Sir Otto Niemeyer, of London, the financial authority, who is visiting New Zealand at the invitation of the Government, arrived in Timaru by the express on Saturday moaning. He left immediately for the Helihitage, Mt. Cook, in a special car placed at his disposal by the Mount Cook Motor Company. Sir Otto was accompanied by Mr A. D. Park, of the Treasury, Mr D. Ardell, of the Department of Internal Affairs, and his secretary (Miss Wilson). On arrival at Timaru, Sir Otto was briefly welcomed by the Mayor (Mr W. Angand). The party will return to-day and will go north by the afternoon's express. Excursion Train. The excursion train from Christchurch brought 160 passengers yesterday, while 140 left Timaru for the north yesterday morning. Hockey. Cambridge A 4 dofeated South End l,.at the Timaru Gardens on Saturday, while Cambridge B and Trinitv drew—--8 all. Golf. In the four-ball match played on the Highfield links on Saturday, Timaru (115) defeated North Otago (24), and in the singles match Timaru defeated tho visitors by 24 to 4. WAIMATE. The Waimate Presbyterian. Women's Mission Union held a work in Knox Hall, and it was a success from every point of view. A satisfactory Amount was raised as a. result of the effort, and it will go to home and (foreign missions. The stall-holders were:—Plain work: "Mrs F. Jones; fancy work: Mrs Lumsden and Misa Spalding; produce: Mrs D. Gunn, Miss Darter, and Mrs O'Brien; cake stall: Mrs Grant and Mrs E. T. C. Turner; sweets; ladies of the choir; refreshments: Mcsdames Skevington, Shrimpton, Armstrong, McDiarmid, Kirkpatrick,'Elliot; and A. Gunn. Mrs Geoffrey Smith, Waimate, is visiting Christchurch to meet her auttt, Miss Cowlishaw, who is returning' from a trip Home. . Mrs Jamos Manchester and Miss Beijk Manohester have returned to Wuimate after a holiday at Hanmer Springs, Messrs W. S. Russell and J. McDonald, of the firm of Turnbull find Jones, have been transferred from Waimate to Christchurch. Seventy-fire couples spent nn enjoyable evening in Messrs Graham and Clear's Hall, the occasion being the annual ball of the Southern Football 01 lib. Music Was supplied by Mr P. Ashley, and Mr G. Dickson was M.C. Spotlight, confetti, and streamer dances were held. The lucky spot was won by Miss M. Fnhey and Mr E. Morrison,- and tho Monte Carlo by Miss K. Wood and Mr J. Holmes.

ORAM. At the monthly meeting of the Geu» eral Committee of the Orarj Tennis Clijb, there were present, Mr W. E. Cook (in the chair), Mrs Misses A. Quirke, C. McQueen (secretary), Messrs R. Earl and H. Culling. Arrangements were made for a working-bee to prepare the courts for opening day, which has been fixed for Saturday, October 4th. The secretary reported that the two bazaar socials had been very successful. The monthly meeting of the Or&ri Women's Institute was held in the Orarl Hall, when Mrs G. A. M. Macdon? aid (president) presided over an attendance of about fifty members. Correspondence was read frorh the Cornwall Federaton of Women's Institutes. Iteßelutions to be brought up at the first annual conference of women 's institutes at Wellington next month were read and d.iseussed. Four new nienibcrs-r-Mesdamos McNiuol and Fuldsetb, Misses J. Austin, and L. Payne—were elected. Members joined heartily in some country dances, which are proving a popular feature each meeting, and also ih the singing of some favourite old songs.
