THE SMOKE NUISANCE.
TO THE EDITOB Oi» THE. PMBS WCfri —I was interested to, see by your | corning that the smoke I W.~ is receiving attention from •t»a|apthofities. In the north-west area City this 'nuisance has become ntoat,, serious; there is a battery of four 'Mtge chimneys 1 in the vicinity of VicfflpV.stteet, and when the wind is from east the. whole area between Victofcla street-and Park terrace is hazy ana.fcioke laden. At times the smoke extends ;across.,North Hagley Park !#jjf it is surprising that the Domains have not had something to say t it. In any case the sooty atmo-re-'created by these chinmeys ren.it necessary at times for people to their windows closed, paint work and garden growth spoiled, it is quite a common thing for en to have to rinse washing out ion account of soots soiling the ;rhung out to dry. The area affecti so .large that the damage is not to private property but to public estg as well, viz., Cranmer square, ■terrace, and Hagley Park.—Yours, KORTH-WEST. atember 20th, 1930.
