* CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT. A successful season is chronicled in the annual report of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, to be presented to the members at the annual meeting on September 3Cth. Following are extracts.from the report:— "The various inter-club competitions were held during the year, the results in the several grades being as follows: —Senior grade, Avonstde, Cashmere, and United, equal; junior A grade, inn wood; junior B grade, .North Beach; Suburban A grade, Cathedral; Buburoan B grade, ildgeware; Suburban O grade, Shirley; ladies' mid-week, Fenaalton.

"The following interprovincial matches took place during the year:—Canterbury v. South Canterbury, at Chr.stchurch; Canterbury v. Otago, at Christchurch. Canterbury was successful in each of the contests. "The outstanding event of the past season was the visit of an Australian team, composed of K. E. Kalms (captain), 0. K Sproule, W. fi. Teague (manager), and 0. J. Donohoe. The only Test match played was staged at Wilding Park, before large and appreciative galleries. The New Zealand team comprised 0. Angas, O. G. France, E. L. Bartleet (captain), and N. B. C. Wilson. The contest was won by Australia by ten matches to two. C. Angas, T. RhodesWilliams, and D. if. Glanville (Canterbury) were selected in that order as members of the South Island team to play against the Australians at Dunedin. S. G. McDougall (Otago) was the fourth member of the team. "The 1929 championship meeting took place in Wellington, commencing on January 27th, this being the first occasion in the life of the Association that the tournament has taken place after the New Year holidays. The entries were fewer than usual. The weather, however, was satisfactory. Success came to Canterbury through 0. Angas winning the men's singles championship, de feating D. G. France (Wellington) in the final. Misses M. Wake and M. Andrew won the women's doubles championship, while Miss I. Morrison was successful in all three junior events, being partnered by Miss 0. Longmore (Wellington) in the doubles and by M. Heenan (Mid-Canterbury Sub-Asso elation) in the combined event. "The challenge match for the Anthon} Wilding Shield between Wellington (holders) and Canterbury was played at Wellington on that Association's grounds at Miraxnar on February 21st and 22nd. and resulted in • win for Wellington. ' 'ln consequence of the New Zealand championships being held towards the and of January, the provincial championships took place during the Christmas holidays. The following are the new championship holders Men's singles, 0. Angas; Men's doubles. W. S. Somerville - and R. H. Tait: women's singles. Miss M. Andrew; women's doubles. Misses M. Andrew and .M. Wake: mixed doubles, Miss M. Andrew and I. A. Seay; boys' singles. A. A. Mac Gibbon: girls' singles. Miss I. Morrison. "foe annual suburban championship and handicap tournament was held as nsual at Wilding Park, and occupied four Saturday ifternoons. For the first time, the championship events were played on the grass courts, this privilege being greatly appreciated by the players. The handicap events were decided apon the "hard" courts. The championship events resulted as follows: Men's singles, J. O'Malley; men's doubles, W. Hawkins and G. R. Robinson; women's singles. Miss V. Bloor; women's doubles. Misses I. and T. Poole; mixed doubles. Miss I. Poole and J. O'Malley. "The South Island hard court ebampion ship and handicap tournament was again awarded to Canterbury, and took place at Wilding Park during the Eakter holidays. The championship events resulted as fol lows:—Men's singles. 0. Angas; men's doubles, O. Angas and T. W. Patterson; women's singles. Miss M. Wake; women' doubles, Mesdames B. A. Miles and W. Peppier; mixe<> doubles. Miss M. Wake and T. W. Patterson; junior open singles (winner of the J. H. Kirk medal), H. S. P. Andrews. . "The financial statements disclose the condition of the Association's affairs. The general revenue account (after being charged with £251 2s 4d as the loss on the Wilding Park revenne account due to the provision for depreciation) shows a loss of £289 4s 6d on the year's working. The balance-sheet discloses that the accumulated funds of the Association' total £18,453 i4s lid. "Recently a sum of £125 has been reoeived by the Association from the brothers and sisters of the late Mr R. D. Harman as a fund created to provide , miniature trophies for v the winners of the R. D. Harman Memorial Cups. A foundation trust deed providing for the appointment of Messrs P. R. Harman and R. Browning as trustees of this fund has bees approved by the Association, and the money is to be suitably invested. "The Test match. New Zealand v. the Australian team, was played on the 'centre courts,' and the players of both teams praised the splendid condition of these courts. The Remaining area, sufficient for eight eourts, sown down in the autumn of 1929, will be available for use in the ensuing season. "The treasurer's statement of accounts shows the position of the revenue account. After allowing the sum of £4lO «5s for depreciation, this account shows a loss of £251 2s 4d for the year. The levy of 2s 6d on the memberships of the City and Suburban elnbs produced the sum of £403 ss, while the sum of £l3B 17s fid was received from the hire of courts. The balance-sheet discloses that the accumulated fund* of the park total £13,398 7s 2d."

KILLINCHY CLUB.

At the annual meeting of the Killmr.hy Tennis Club, Mr E. Bruoe presided over a good attendance. It waa reported that the club had affiliated with the Ellesmere Sub-Association, and had played a second grade team in the competitions. Merrick; captain, Mr T. Nairn; vicecaptain, Mr T. Millar; auditor, Mr B. Bruce; umpires, Misses B. McLenagben, £• Lemon. B. Allen, C. Allen, Messrs J. Allen, T. Millar, J. Merrick, and H. McLenaghen. Opening day waa fixed for September 27th.

TEMP LET ON CLUB.

At the eighth annual meeting of the Templeton Tennis Club the president (Mr D. Mackie) presided. Ths following officers were elected:—President, Mr D. Mackie: vice-presidents, Messrs G. P. Kissel, O. Coll ings, and G. A. Kissel; committee. Misses Cuneen and Carey, Messrs Cuneen, Oldridge, and G. Playle; dub captain. Miss V. Mortland; delegate to Lawn Tennis Association, Mr G. Playle; honorary secretary, Mr W. O. Smith. Opening day was fixed for October 4th. It was decided that one team should be entered for the A grade competitions.
