LYTTELTON NEWS.
SUNDAY TRAIN SERVICE. ' Intending travellers on the Christ-church-Lyttelton line to-morrow are reminded that a complete alteration has been made in the time-table, as an nounced earlier in the week. In particular, it should be noted that the last train leaves Christchurch at 9.0 p.m. and Lyttelton at 9.30 p.m., hal£ an hour earlier in each case. The announcement that the Sunday fares on the Lyttelton line ax© to be lowered to the suburban rates ruling on week-days, was received with very great satisfaction in- the Port yesterday. Besidents who are in a position to know, have contended all along that the raising of the fares was a mistake, and would cause the Department to lose money, instead of increasing the receipts. The manager of a ferry launch company stated that had the higher fares been continued during the summer months, it would have - blocked the excursion traffic on Sundays completely, as people would not pay even the second class fare of Is lOd with a shilling launch fare, when they could travel to Sumner or New Brighton for a shilling or Is 3d, or to Timaru for ss. The Government had done well to recognise their mistake in time. He thought the excursion traffic on Sundays should be encouraged, as in the case of Timaru and Arthur's Pass, and he expressed the opinion that the Department might give consideration to the issuing of special excursion fares to Lyttelton on Sundays and holidays.
