So many exemptions have been granted from the operations of the sales tax that it is doubtful whether it will vield anything like the £3 COO.OOO estimated in the Budget, said the Acting-Minister for Markets, Mr F. M. Forde. No date has yet been fixed for the opening of the Federal Parliament. The Federal Cabinet sub-committee has explored the whole field so far as economies and taxation are concerned. The Antinw-Treasurer, Mr J. A. Lyons, stated that new taxation as well as economies in expenditure will lie necessary to balance the Budget this financial year. RAILWAY WORKERS* AWARDS. MELBOURNE. September 17. After days of strenuous argument the Full Court of Arbitration'decided that it would hear amplications by the Railway Commissioners of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, and Tasmania for an order setting aside the awards of the various railway unions. The Young Australia League is launching a proposal for n party of 30 boys, drawn from the city and country districts in New Zealand to go to Australia during the forthcoming schools' Christmas vacation. Travels will include Sydney, Canberra. Geelong. Hallnrat and Melbourne. Applicants must be between the ages of 13 and 18 vearo and must be attending school. The party will travel first-class by boat each way. Tentative dates have been fixed for the party to leave Auckland on December 27th and the travel* will occupy over four weeks.
