THE BIG ROAD RACE. ARRANGEMENTS DISCUSSED. A letter from the Waimato Club stated that the Mayor of Waimnte, Mr Dash, had consented to start the first batch of riders in tlie race. Tho chairman, Mr W. J. Walter, reported that he had recently seen the Waimato officials, and they were very keen on the raco. They were out, to make it n (success, and would do all they could for riders and officials when they woro in Wniunite. Mr G. Henderson reported that the Pioneer Sports Club were going to conduct u programme of novelty events at the tjhow Grounds prior to the finish of the raco. The programme would include n football match, motor-car and motor-cyclo relay races, and an obstacle race. The inconvenience to judges through riders who have—finishea the race, eve-ling round the track and passing the judge's post again was mentioned by Mr X M Coffey. "I would favour suspending such riders for five years," ho said. "It puts the judging out badly, and Inst year judging was upset through two riders cycling round after the finish." Ho moved that any rider cycling round the track should t>e disqualified for five years. "It is a seri. ous thing," he said. '.'Five years is too hard," said the chairman. An amendment that riders offending in this respect should.be fined £2 was carried by five votes to tfcree.
"There am too many cars on the roads loading to the finish wnich eeriously interfere with the: cyclists," said Mr G. JJendorson, referring to crowding of tho roads by traffic. "It" is impossible frequently for the bookmarker's to make up their handicaps when cars nro driven among the riders. Somaniw will bo deprived of. the >race in this manner before many/yemrs are passed." *■ . . \ The chairman: Tho Wninjari County Council have arranged for two inspectors to patrol tho roads, and I would like ttotidns to bo brought against motorists who. interfere-with the riders i<| any way. Wo want to block the roadsyfrom Rolleston onwards. NORTH CANTERBURY CENTRE. MEETING OF DELEGATES. Doleeatfls to the North Canterbury Centre of the Now Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union met J last evening,' Mr W. J. Walter presiding. - ■ ■' The New Zealand Union wrote that the annual conference would be held at Stratford, commencing on January 7th, 1881, and asking that any renuta which the Canterbury Centre wishod to bring up be forwarded. It wag decided to dUcuss what remits Should be forwarded at the nest meeting. A letter was received from the Papanui Amateur Sports Club stating that a rider, G K. Morria, who had competed in a professional raco, had now fulfilled hi* financial obligations to the Papanul Club. The letter suggested that the Athletic and Cycling Union should ascertain the standing of new competitor*: when they entered in professional race*. The letter was received and it was decided to adopt the suggestion of the Papanui Club. . - It was decided to hold tho threormues Canterbury championship at the Dunsandel meeting; on New Year's Day. It was decided to thank Mr E. Stillwelt for conducting a dance in aid of funds for the Waimato to Christchurca road race.
