ANNUAL STEEPLECHASE. The annual croap-country steeplechase run for the pupils of the West Chrutchureh District High School v-as held yesterday afternoon. A large muster of 140 boys started on the run round South Hagley Park, where a course of just over two and a half miles was marked out. Starting from opposite the school, in tho Boys' Anociat'on Cricket Ground, the track led round the ir.side of the Park fence, turning along Deans avenue past (he Aldington saleyaids to a creek, where there was the first of three water jumps. The trail then went to tho Riccarton Hotel corner and back along Riccarton avenue, over two more water jumps, to the Hospital corner. »«d into the cricket grounds again for the finish. After the field had settled down soon after the eUrt L Dalley, G. Tulloch, and W. Jeaeon went to the front, and with Dall«y taking most of tho pace maintained their itositions all tho way. Between 'hem and the wcond bunch of senior boys eeveral of tho juniors—undrr 15 years—were running elrougly, N. McNaughton and T, Treziso pushing (he leaders for a considerable distance. Dalley, Tulloch and Wesson came UP \9 the finishing line together in a great tussle for the places. Dalley led by two ysrds over the last fence, and Tulloch put in a strong challenge. The two were almost on level terms, wifch Jesson five-yards behind, Dalley held his advantage. »nd in a vary elose finish beat Tulloch by a bare yard, Jesson being five yards away. There was a> gap of 100 yards before the next boy came in. Tho junior finish was also a strong one, SJoNanghton and Tresis* running togethei till JOO yards from home, when the former drew away to gain a lead of elsht yards. f, O'Brien was ¥> yard" away, beating 8.
