WOMEN IN PUBLIC LIFE.
DBBATB AT BUMNBRGratifying interest was shown in the first inter-borough debate between Sumner and New Brighton, which was held in the £..mner Town flail on Tuesday. The Mayor <Mr W. H. Nicholson) presided and Mr E. W. White acted as judge. The subject was: "That the Entrance of Women into Public and Commercial is Detrimental." The speakers for New Brighton, who spoke against the motiou. wsT* tho Rev. M. Feist, the Rev. T M- Curuow, and. Mr T. A. C" r now, Sumner's speakers were Messrs J. S Barr, J, E. Tait, and J. H. Thomas. The Mayor welcomed the visitors, and expressed the hope that this debate would be the forerunner of a yearly fixture. The subject was debated in an interesting and very capable way. and thf> judge gave his decision in favour of New Brighton, the points awarded being: New Brighton 315, Sumner 305.
