With nothing but parade and track form - to go upon, backers nevertheless plumped solidly for the local filly Korokio in the Debutante Stakes, She drew 13 in the field of 10, but showed great brilliance to run past two or three better placed and take the lead before a furlong had been covered. Sho was joined by' King Colossus and Sailing at the three furlongs, but then drew out entering the straight from King Colossus, galling, Bella, and Chief Clerk. Korokio hong out < badly coming into line, but the ibsuo was never in doubt, and she won by a length from King Colossus, La Poupee came last over the concluding stages to run King Colossjis to half a length. Curie was three or four lengths back fourth, followed by Chief ' Clerk, Eclla, Hampden, and Cape Gold, . The winner won hsndsomaly, showing great brilliance. It is too early, of course, to be definite in any opinion regarding two-year-olds, but Korokio is certainly a very fast filly. King Colossus had every chance, but La Poupee "was badly placed early, and came home very fast. She showed a lot of promise. None of the others ever had 8 chance. , The Hurdle Contest. The Aucklander, Luminary, who had lost liis rider at the first fence on the opening day, started a warm favourite for the hurdles, having a change of rider. Always well placed, he finished up by scoring a comfortable win.. Luminary and Opa led from Royal Acre, thea Make Up and Nukumai from Avro. Luminary, Royal Acre, and Nukumai were at tho head of the field going down the back tho last time from Make Up and Avro. Royal Acre led Luminary into the straight from Nukumai and Avro, and once over tho last fence Luminary galloped away ,to win by over two lengths. Avro falling by a head to reach Royal Acre. _ _ Luminary never looked in serious danger Of dofeat. Avro jn«t failed for second, but Royal Acre would have beaten him by a bigger margin had 11. Dulieu not strained his injured shoulder at tho last fence. Nukumai was a trifle sore, but ran a fine race. Hake "Up was never going well. A Close Finish. » Autopsy won the back sprint in solid style in a blanket finish, the actual favourite, Pomp, being out of a place. There was a" delay at the start, Arrowaone breaking the ■ tapes, and when let go he began best from Huntingdon, Taranto, Baskier, Autopay, and Tar Baby. The favourite, Pomp, with sewal others, were poorly away, and getting knocked from pillar to post. Huntingdon, Autopay, and Baskier were in close order on the turn from Taranto, then Pomp, who had flashed into brilliancy, and Zarene, Autopay, Huntingdon, and Baskier came on flat out, and then Zarene slipped up on the rails. Autopay hung ■ on to beat Zarene by half a head. Huntingdon ire® a similar margm away, with Pass- On wide out and Baskier j almost in line, less than half a length away. Another bunch crossed the line on terms, the most prominent being Brilliant Light, Pomp, Tar Baby, Taranto, and Arrowzone. Autopay ran an honest, solid race, and deserved his win.' which puts him out of hack company. At the same time it looked ai if Zarene, with a little luck, would have wen. Huntingdon* ran an exsellent raee. Pass On came from a long way back, bnt Baskier was always handy.' and Improved

on his showing in the maiden the first day. Pomp. was unlucky. He showed a great burst of *pe*d in tho middle stages, but wa* forced out very wide coming Into line, • fatal obstaclo to eueees* on tha Wanganui track. A Xose Victory. For the fourth year in succession Laughing Prince won the Eclipse Stake*, a rare battling finish between him and Toxeuma being staged. Lady Pam lost ground at the start, Toxeuma and Laughing Princti moving first. When settled down, Toxeuma made the paee, and, being joined by Simba, they led from Laughing Prince, who was joined at the end of two furlongs by Lady Pam. For tha nest three furlong* the order was Toxeuma and Simba from Laughing Prince and LadSr Pam, then Vertlgern. A* they approached the straight, Ellis sent Toxeuma away, and Laughing Prince slipped through the vacant space outside Simba and followed Toxeuma Into line. They immediui .ly joined issue, and although Toxtuma came ti-t and met him, Laughing Prlnte had mastered him. ToxeUma came again In th« last few strides, but Laughing Prince beat him by a nose amidst great excitement. Lady Pam wa* just over two lengths away third, with Vertigern fourth and Simba last. It was a great race. Ellis committed an error of judgment In leaving Simba so soon. Had he stayed where he wa* Laughing Prlnco would have had to eome Into line third horse out instead of following in tho tracks of hln most dangerous rival. Lad; Pam ran a good race, and so did Vertigern, but Simba was well beaten. His Initial Success. Arisus broke his maiden status when he won the Trial Handicap from the first day's winner, Vandyke. There wa* a delay at the post, Vandyke again being very unruly. When let go, Arisus and Imamint hit tho front from Laconic, Ganpat, Jayson, Vandyke, and Paratoo. The lastnatned drifted going down the back. Arisus and Imamint wero joined by Jayson at the half-mile, and they led round the turn from Ganpat, Vandyke, and Paratoo. Arisus took charge in the straight, and Vandyke and Paratoo, being fnroed out wide, were late in getting up to challenge. Arisus won by a length from Vandyke, who beat Paratoo by two lengths. Imamint wa* fourth, followed by Acmil, Laconic, Jayson, Cluny, Little Wonder, and Pandia. Arisus won well. Vandyke ran a good race, and so did Paratoo, who looked distinctly unlucky in the running. Tmamint performed creditably, but she had every chance. Acmll ran a good race. Courageous Impresses, Tho majority of those who made Mr W, B. Komball's bracket socoud favourite in tbe Jliggiu Handicap depended upon Hyuanna, but it .was Courageous who pulled them through when ho b«at tbe favourite, Mendip. Ituanui got badly left, the early order being Msndly, Marjoram, Royal Game, and Tourist, from My Own, Black Mint, Hynaona, Yoma, and Pahu. Tourist want up fast at tha alx furlongs pott aud took th* lead, bqlng clear of Koyal Game, who in turn was clear of Marjoram, Mertdlp, Hyhsnna, My Own, and Duellona. Half a mile from home they wero closing on the leaders. Tourist and Royal Gama just holding prlda or plea* from Marjoram, Mendip, flynanna, Yoma. and Courageous. Mertdlp wa* first into lino from Marjoram and Courageous. Th* last-named finished solidly and beat Mendip by a short length, with Marjoram two lengths away third. Yoma wa* fourth, followed by Hyoanna, Buanul, My OwO. Tourist, and Pahu. Courageous was much batter placed for hie run home than usual, and finished too aolidly for Mendip. Marjoram ran a good race, but had* ovary ohanee. Old Yoma was not disgraced. The tlma of th* race, 2.7 8-8, ia a raci record by 1 l-6»ec, which *uited the wlnnar, who atays wall. His mate, Hynanna, was nater dangerou*. Ituanui ran a good race after losing anything op to lengths at tha start. A Big Dividend. Johneen, beginning wall in tha hack dietauee event, was never headed, and scored 11 surprise win over tho favourite, Shortly. Behind Johneen in the running were Shortly, Imateagirl, Mount Shannon, Grand Jury, and Spearopa. Johneen led round the home turn from Mount Shannon, Shortly, Imateagirl, and Grand Jury, Tha last-named got a run on the rails, but Johneen held on and beat Shortly by a neck, with Grand Jury a length away. Kahikntoa was a handy fourth, and than earns Spaaropa, Pedestal, Mount Shannon, Calamine, and Marry Melody. Tha winner scored on Ms merits, and his auocaia marks tha first stake to one of the Weatharvanes. Shortly and Grand Jury ran wall. Ths latter wa* powlbly a trifle unlucky. but Shortly had every chance. K»Mkatoa onlsh*d well. Tho disappointment was the third favourite, Mount Shannon. In the picture all the way to tha *tralght, he failed to ran on. fttocfcnnter Maks* Good. There was a rush to get on Arrow Lad and Fernden in tha concluding event, the Owen Handicap, but baokera were astray. Freehold and Fsrnden were first to show out from Arrow Ui and Aeors, the last-named being on th* outside ot the three over the initial stails. Freshold and Aeors ware together after going three furlong*, and Arrow Lad, Fsrnden, To Atlawa, and Llmoeln followed, with Staghunter trailing the field. Aeora and Ts Atlawa had beaded Freehold before they entered the atralght with Fernden and Arrow Lad also showing up, and Staghunter Ju»t commencing to move. Once fairly straightened up, Stashuntsr mowed down his fold, and won going away by a length. Aoora was just a short head in front of Ta Atlawa,, with Fsrnden and Arrow had tho oless, and showed jnst what ho ean do when in the mood. Aeora showed plOnty of *p*od, and Te Atiawa alto went well. Fernden wa* a trifle unluoky, but no excuse ean bo made for Arrow Lad. 1 OTAGO HUNT. STEEPLECHASE TO DIAMOND JACK. i33OCIATIOH KLEGam.) DUNEDIN, September 13. Perfect weather favoured the Otago Hunt Club for their Annual Meeting at Wlngatui to-day. There was a fair attendance, and tha track was ia good order but on the slow aide.
