TURF GOSSIP.

Hie A»libiu ton County Racinp; Olub'a Spring Meeting will engage the attentio# of racegoers on Saturday next. Acceptances will be duo at 8 p,m. tomorrow. Count C'avour was responsible fpr one of his old-time track efforts m a gallop with his brother, Gustavo, at Hiovarton on Saturday. Tho pair finished together in front of Rapina at the end of seven furlongs, covered ia 1.35. Count Carour cpmpleted his work fuil of running, and fijave indication* that he is far irom being a spent foree. Quarterdeck (I. Tilson) and Star Stranger 11. (W. Scobie) were associated in a task over four hurdlca at Bioeaxton on Saturday. The former gave a splendid display, but hor companion did not jump as well as on previous occasions. Rotewood, winner of tho concluding event at Wingatui on Saturday, is a tive-year-ofd mare by Solferino from She's Named, dam of Sun Up and Holrose. Like her relatives, she raced up to thi« eeason u being fiwu an All lUsd—'VV inter Rose wars, but tha owner of the latter decided to give her a name a few month# back, and the above offort was the reault. It is not often that an Australianbred two-year-old figures aa an early winner in New Zealand, but such wua the case on Saturday, when Korokio accounted for the Debutante Stakes ut Wanganui. She ia by Eadfern, from Moriaen, by Challenger, from Merry Widow, by Wallace, and is a sister to Fernden, both owned by Mr W. Jury, who bought them as yearlings at the gydoey sales. In the case of Korokio, she looks like being a cheap proposition, as Mr Jury secured her for 70 guinea* in April last. The result of the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick on Saturday would not bo surprising to New Zealanders, aa J?bar Lao's chance* of again beating Nightmarch Iw&ed very likely. Tha coniiezwn* of the Riccarton horso have now cause to realise that any further attempts to down Phar Lap will be futile. * caught him off colour in tho Mdbourno Cup. Night, march has been in the money in his tlwqe starts on the' present trip, and has earned stake money to the value of #B4O. Paquito's win in the Spring E&ndi* cap would be ploaaing to thu&o who have supported him in the Metropolitan Handicap. An interesting feature d tha rate wss the fact that his exl£ahl« mate, Gay Crest, ran bun to, a asok margin, and that the latter was ridaen by G. Bnmphrias t apprenticed to P» D. Jon*. The result would point to Gay Great having little chance of turning the tables on Faqulto in tha Ug R&ndwick race, as whereas Faouito oonobded 181b on Saturday, he will be meeting Gay Crest on Sib better terms in the Metropolitan; on ihe other hand, Gay Crest's performance was very impressive, as the ten fur. longs was covered in exceptionally fast tune, only a second and a half outside tha Australian and New Zealand rocord, credited to Winning Hit at Rio carton. According to the cabled acoount of the Chelnuword Stakes, Phar tap had h lot in hand at the finish, and yet lie out out tha nine furlongs in 1.51 j. t/f 1 8-4 worse than the Australian and New Zqalanri reoord, established by Fiijiann in Brisbane. ' First Sight would not lose many udmirers for the Epsom Handicap i>y 111 creditable third placing in the Welter Handicap at Randwick on Sat* i.nitty He conceded no leas than 361b to the winner, Sargon, and 931b to the runner-up, Potent, and was only h length and a half away from Sarjon, hi tho comparatively good time of 1.391. The result of the Novice Handicap at bha Tattersall'a Club Meeting on butuvday, in which Dunraven and Adelphi were engaged, was not cabled, to that it can be assured that neither of tbs Riccarton representatives took paH in the finish. .King Colossus, runner-up to Korokio in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday, is the first of the progeny of tho English horse Colossus to race. Colossus, who is attaohed to the same stud us Hunting Song, is a Polymelus horse from Nation, by Sunder, and himself was « winner of several races in England. Queen Elisabeth, Jam of tho tweyeuMdd. and also of a good performer ia Ruapapa, waa bred by Mr T. H. lowry, and is by Finland, from Sonnatte, by Royal Fusilier, from La CSoeha, far St. Leger. La Poupee. who finished in third place, is a filly by Tan Tray from Danoing Doll, by Black Jester, from My Dolly, by Sundridge, aad w*b geld by Mr J, G. Duncan at Trantnam for 100 guineas. TrMtoao, winner of the President's Handicap at tha Otago Hunt Club's Meeting on Saturday, is a three-yoar-old filer by Tractor from an Obsono nan. Last eesson, ahe waa raced on Hfrao occasions, bcr ,be«t performances being a eeoood and a third placing. A cable from Qydney on Saturday mgmMl thst ; Limerick was not likely too# sean. out again on the present trto. His owner, Mr H. A. Knight, stated on Saturday that,he had resolved a eabla from his trainer that Timsrick wss suffering from rheumatic tronhle, but Jones did not indicate that tha folding was finished with as a racing proposition. His prospects of returning to the winning list do hot, however, look verv favourable under the circumstances.

-Acceptances i'or two trotting events at the Ashburton County Racing Club's, Spring Meeting close to-morrow at 5 p.m. Sunraines, winner ot* the Wiugatui Trotting Handicap at the Otago Hunt Club'a Meeting on Saturday, is a five-year-old mare by Sungod from Queen's Pet, and her only provioua win was attained at the Vincent Jockey Club's Meeting in January last, when Bhe went 3.42 3-5 for a mile and a half, Tho brooding of Sunvainoß is interesting, for lior dam, Queen's Pet, comes of a good family, being by General Pet from Harold's Rest, by King Harold —Polly, by Robin Hood. Queen's Pet ia a halfsister to Harold Rothschild, a successful sire, and Queen's Drive, who, besides being a good race maro, left a very good racehorso in Black Admiral, while Pleasant Drivo, who was out of Queen 'a Drive, loft two in DalnaHino and Dalmeny. Kcverio, by Peter Moko from Dveomlaad, is tho latest addition to F. G. Holmos's Addington team. Free Advice, at one time trained by J. Bryce, at Hornby, and later by MeKendriclc Brothers at Auckland, has been leased by a patron of W. J. Tomkinson's stable. Froo Advice, at her best, is a very smart pacer, and capable of better things than sho has j'ct shown in public. A report published somo tyno ago was to the effect that Padlock had been retired from the race track, and would spend the "rest of his days in idleness on liis owner's farm near Palmerston North. Padlock had suffered from unsoundness, but a good spell seems to have dono him a world of good, and it is now stated that he will commence a special preparation for the New Zealand Cup. Padlock did not race so well as expected in last year's Cup, which, was won by Peter Bingen, but he showed himself still in the first flight of sprinters. by winning the Freo-for-All from a high-class field that included Peter Bingen, Logan Park, Author Jinks, Prinee Pointer, and Native Prince.

THE HANDLING OF NIGHTMARCH.

STEWARDS OPEN ENQUIRY. (CKITSD mil ASaOCUTIOX—»* SLICTftIC TISM!OIU#R~'JOPI»«»*T.) (Received September 14tli, 6.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 14. The stewards have opened an enquiry regarding Roy ltocd'a handling of Nightmarch in the Chelmsford Stakes. The grounds have not been stated, nud the commentators are mystified. They point out that Phar Lap won on tho bit, while Nightmarch beat the rest of the field. The enquiry has been adjourned till Monday. LIMERICK IN A BAD WAY. - • • SYDNEY, September IS. It is practically pertain that the Australian racing public has seen the last of Limerick. After working on the track he pulled up in a very bad way. GERALDINE R.C. At « meeting of tho committee of the Qeraldine llacing Club, Mr JSouth presided, A letter wa» received ' from the Railway Department advising that they had ncheduled the express train to stop at Hinds on the daya or the race meeting. The secretary submitted the train arrangement* for the meeting. These were approved, ject to the Department being asked u the Timara train oould not arrive at Orari earlier. Letters were received from the Racing Conferenoe setting out the taxes to be imposed at the forthcoming meeting. Mr H. D. James accepted the same conditions as last year for working the totalisator. Tho matter of paying for horaes transported to the Meeting by motor-lorry was discussed, ae a result of a letter from Mr J. T. Lister, St. Andrews. It was decided to adhere to the original arrangements and to pay inwaro freight by rail only, members stressing toe fnct that this wa* only fair to the Railway Department, which had assisted greatly m arranging trains for the Meeting. , The Course Committee was authorised to build a loading bank in a convenient position. The nominations received for tho Meeting were favourably commented upon, and satisfaction was expressed at the excellent support accorded by owner? and trainers. The following were elected members: Messrs B. MoNab. A. Strang, Walker, Rod. MtoLeod, W, Pierce, and TFraser. HANDICAPS. Tin following handicap* have fc«»n d<v I eland by Mr f. 0.
