LINWOOD CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. Th* forty-fifth annual report of ,JAeJ ■wood Tennis Club'spates that -the past seafeoa has- been very. successful, and that tfce club still maintains its position of being one o£ tha largest in Canterbury, not only in the number of members, but also in tha' number of courts available for play. Tha pavilion has been completed • nearly, a- year, < and has proved a" great asset to the club, not only as a convenience to members, but also as a means of fostering the social side of the club's activities.in the way of dances and social functions.' The balance-sheet siiows that the club ia "in a -sound • financial position. Tha report continues:—The membership is now 338, comprising 163 .men and 165 women. The club can cater for. .400, so that there is still room for new members. - Sunday 'play is still very popular. "The club entered teams for both the. junior A and B competitions, and was sue* cessful in winning the' A grade shield. ■ The No. 1 team are to be heartily congratulated on keeping the shield which has now been held by Linwood for three years running. Tgie B team No. 1 did exceptionally well, - and went very close to winning the B grade shield. Courts 1, 2, and 3 are to be excavated
and re-laid to the ground level of court 4. Two sew doable, courts and one single court are to be put in their place. This w-rlc will he done at once and will greatly improve the- playing area. It Is-to be. hoped .'that the work wil» be finished as expeditiously as possible; the courts should then be in : splendid order and no alterations or big expense incurred, for some considerable time; Courts 7 to 11 have been top-dressed- in Colfiz, a new space has been provided lor the volley board, and the area surrounding the pavilion, has been asphalted. It has been the aim of the committee to improve the club's grounds to the full extent that finances will allow. U.S. SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. DOEG DEFEATS SHIELDS. Shields beat Sidnev Wood 6-2 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. J. H. Doeg beat W. T. Tildea 10-8,- 6-3, 8-6, 12-10. ' Doeg won the national singles, defeating Shields 10-8, 1-6, 6-4, 16-14. INTERNATIONAL TOURS.
