PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO THE PAWS.) GREYMOUTH, Soptember 5. Miss Hazel Lawn, o£ Greymouth, has been notified that she passed her L.T.C.L. in the Trinity College examination held recently. Obituary. The death occurred this morning of Mrs Margaret Rose, aged 58 years. She was the widow of Mr Joseph Rose, who died twelve months ago. Mrs Bose leaves one son, Mr Joseph Rose, and one daughter, Miss Lila Rose, both of Westport. She is survived also by her mother, Mrs D. Hamilton, and two brothers. The death occurred yesterday, at Picton, of Mrs A. J. Thomson, only daughter of Mr Wills, of Greymouth. Residence Destroyed. A fire early this morning totally destroyed the six-roomed residence of Mr Charles Pinn, Runanga. Mr and Mrs Pinn and family retired about 11 last night, and at 2 a.m. Mr Pinn awakened and discovered that the dining-room was in flames above the fireplace. No water supply was available, and nothing was saved. Acclimatisation Society. The Westland Acclimatisation Society met last evening, Dr. Teichclniann (president) presiding over a full attendance of the Council. The Tourist Department wrote promising a reply later in regard to a closo season for deer in Westland, to ensure the collection of stalking fees in order to augment the funds for culling. The president of the New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies' Association wrote agreeing that ft close season for opossums should be universal throughout tho Dominion. It was resolved that the proposals bo supported. The Grey Acclimatisation Society wrote favouring a close season for opossums for two years.—lt was suggested that a throe years' close season appeared essential. 0 Tho Grey Society also wrote suggesting that 100,000 trout fry be liberated in the Toremakau river jointly by the two societies. The meeting favoured tho number being reduced by half, tho Grey Society to liberato 23,000 fry. Rugby League. The West Coast Rugby League has been advised that there is every likelihood of the Canterbury representatives paying a visit to the West Coast on September 14th. Grey Jockey Club. A meeting of th'e District Committee of the Greymouth Jockey Club was held this afternoon. Present: Messrs T. E. Coates (president), A. E. Kilgour, D. J. Evans, A. Beban, W. H. Parfitt, and W. B. Gilbert. Mr J. O'Brien, M.P., wrote promising support to the telegraphing of money to tbe racecourse for investment on tho totalisator, but stated that he was against increased taxation on totalisator investments. The president suggested that the various clubs should meet before finally deciding on their programmes, so that uniformity could be arranged in the various events. Subsequent to tho District Committee meeting a meeting of the committee of the Greymouth Jockey Club was held. Present: Messrs T. E. Cootes (chairman), H. D. James, A, Beban, W. H. Parfitt, G. R. Harker, K. Williams, J. D. Wingham, and C. H. Kettle. The committee expressed satisfaction that tho Greymouth Borough was carrying out widening work on the Omoto road, which leads to the Omoto racecourse. Mr W. Coltman was elected a member of the club. After discussion regarding the issue of complimentary tickets it was resolved to call a meeting of representatives of the club to discuss the whole position. Tho secretary presented a balance-sheet covering last year's operations. This disclosed a profit of £526 9s 9d.

Cobdea Town Board. An election of seven Commissioners for the Cobden Town Board will be held on September 17th. Nominations received are as follows: —C. B. Uddstrom and D. T. Cochrane (sitting memBerg). W. J. Mettrick, J. Skeats, B. u. Clarke, J. Keney, W. J. Inglis, M. F. Washer, C. Orams, T. 11. Jones, and x. L. Turley. Mr F. L Turleys was the only nomination for tho Groy Hospital Board. Messrs C. B. XJddstrom and F. L. Turley were nominated for the position of the Board's representative on the Grey Electric Power Board.
