ELLESMERE. A meeting of the General Committee Of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Assoclation was held at Leeston, Mr G. W. R. Osborno presiding. . The president said that a protest had be® l * tent to the Prime Minister against the removal o£ the duties upon barley and wheat. A repiy had been received that it would receive consideration. The meeting adopted a suggestion by Mr John Brooks that the president and Messrs A. J. Inwood, J. Boag, and J. Brook* should confer with Mr W. D. Lawrence, a found*, tion member, for the purpose of compiling a short history of the Association, to be incorporated in the Diamond Jubilee Show catalogue, . . A letter was received from the Board 01 Agriculture to the effect that it considered the embargo on the importation of live ®tocK from Great Britain should be lifted at tne end of thia year, and that it farming bodies were agreeable* a recommendation to that effect would be made to the Government. The opinion of the Association was sought. . Mr W. 0. Kennle advised that great caution should be exercised. It was doubtful whether, all risk of foot and month disease spreading would be over by the end of tnis year. He did not think there was urgent need for the importation of stud itock from the Home market at present, and it would be a serious matter if the disease should reacli the Dominion. It wad unanimously agreed that the lilting of the embargo was undesirable. Messrs L. Chambers and W. Johnston were elected members ef the Association. The president announced that In addition to £BB raised previously, the canvasser# had collected £B9 5* towards the cost of the entrance gates and approaches at the Show Ground, which were intended to perpetuate the memory of the founders of the Association and pioneers generally. The amount aimed at was £2OO. It was agreed that his Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) should be invited to perform the official opening of the gates at i p.m. on Show Day, October 16th. Mr H. Schnelle, on behalf of Mr Job Osborne, handed over a cheque for £l5O to be invested In perpetuity, the interest to be used to provide a first and second prize each year, to be known as the "Job Osborne better farming prise." Mr Osborne had given the committee the option of deciding how the prises were to be awarded, but had sug« gested that a sub-committee should be set up to confer with the farm-costing section of the Canterbury Agricultural College regarding conditions, and also that particular encouragement should be riven to the keeping in oheck of noxious weeds. Mr Schnelle said that Mr Osborne had taken a live interest in the welfare of the Assoeiation, and had left his mark on the farming history of th« dUtrlct. The money was being given to mark his sixty years' membership of the Association. Mr Schnelle moved that the donation be gratefully accepted. The announcement was received with applause and Mr Schnelle's motion tyas carried. The secretary was instructed to convey tlio Association's thanks to Mr Osborne by letter. Messrs It, T. McMillan, W. 0. Rennie, and T. A. Stephens were appointed the sub-oom-mittee to confer with the coating section of the Lincoln College staff.
