NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. On Thursday evening the officers of the Christchurch Presbyterian Sunday School Union, accompanied by othermembers, paid a fraternal visit to the superintendent and teachers of John Knox and Coldstream School. The gathering was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, and was presided over by the Iter. W. R. Hutchison. A dresses on Sunday school work, of an inspiring character, were given by Mr T. W. 11. Hiti, (president of the Union), Mr •Tames Thomson (vice-president), Mr \V. Goss, and Mrs Foster. Mr A. G. Stewart, who is superintendent of both the Rangiora and Coldstream Schools, spoke in appreciation of the visit and addresses, and on the motion of Mr C. I. Jennings, a vote of thanks was accorded the speakers. •The picture to be-presented at Everybody?, Town Hall, this evening is "Kit Carson," an action-play of the west, with that prince of western heroes, Fred Thompson, in the lead, N<>ra Lane is his leading lady. "Kit Carson" brings the best that western dramas 'can bring to the screen, a diversity of human interest, hard riding, and straight shooting. WAIAU. A citizens' ball was held in the public hall on Wednesday night, when there was n. »ood attendance, including a number of visitors from Cu^verden and Rotherham. ■ The decorations of coloured streamers and native greenery were tastefully arranged. Music ■was supplied by Breach's Orchestra, of Rangiora; and Mrs White and Miss Brown played extras. The M.C.'s were Messrs R-, Bean and D. Ross. A dainty supper, provided by the ladies, was handed /round. The function was a most enjoyable and successful one, the success-being mainly due to the organiser, ;Mrs G. White, ; the energetic secretary, Mr C. Gilbert, and a hardworking committee. . After a week's spring-like weather, a change took place during Wednesday night, when light rain commenced to fall, which continued throughout the greater part' of Thursday. There was a' decided fall in temperature and snow again 'fell on; the ranges. Yesterday morning broke beautifully fine, but with a fairly sharp frost. SCARGILL. . In the report of the Miniature rifle Club's match, Scargill v. Waikari t the score for Scargill A team was given in error as 781. This should have been 778. R. Punnctt's score wag 67, not 70 as given. ASHLEY BANK. There was a good attendance at'the weekly card evening at Ashley Bank. The prizes went to Miss G.' Ludeman and Mr K. Collie, and the, aggregates for sis weeks were won by Miss N. Downing and Mr F. Lowe, with Mr W. G. Mayer runner-upi Supper was served after the-play." Keen interest is being taken in the Queen Carnival arranged by the School Committee. A hard-up social will be held , in aid of the •funds. The weather at Ashley Bank- is very cold and unseasonable. AKAROA. A hard-tip- and old-trmerS' dance, promoted by the local branch of the -Plunket Society was held Oddfellows' Hall this week. After two dull and foggy days rain commenced to fall at 3 a.m. .on Thursday, continuing until 4 p.m.; during thai, time 92 points' werg registered. The tops of the hills received'a light coating of snow, ' . The twenty-eighth attnual* meeting of the Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade was held .on Wednesday evening, Superintendent A. MacFarlane presiding. The balance-sheet was . 'adopter, .showing a satisfactory credit.-The election of officers resulted 1 as follows: Superintendent, Mr A. MacFarlane; deputy superintendent, Mr W. Pool; foreman, Mr S. W. Hayward; secretary, Mr H. J. Pool ; treasurer, Mr S. W. Hayward; mechanician, Mr E. H. Giddcns; and auditor, Mr C. Stewart; At tlie conclusion of the business the Brigade entertained the members ■ of the Borough Council and ' honorary members at a, smoke concert. Oh behalf of active members, the Mayor (Mr G.. Armstrong) presented D.. Langrope' with a Kai'apoi rug on completion of 25 years' servioe. . The Mayor also made the following presentations years' gold bar, Superintendent A. SPRINGSTON. On Wednesday evening the Returned Soldiers' Miniature Rifle Club held a handicap tournament, which was won by Colonel J.. Stafford, who handed back the trophy to be shot.for again. The second shoot was won by F. Ridden. Next Wednesday the shootin<" will be continued, and a general meeting will also be held. Tisdall, Ltd., is presenting a cup for competition, for which only financial members bers will be allowed to compete. doyleston. The Irivell Football Club lield its annual ball on Thursday evening in the* Doyleston Hall) which was crowded with guests. Bryson s Orchestra provided the music. Enthusiasm, combined with good team work on the part of the members directly responsible for the organisation,, were factors in the success of the ball.
MARSHLAND. There was a very unwelcome change in the weather on Thursday, when a cold wind was experienced, and eight degrees of frost were registered yesterday morning. This is unfortunate, as the grass was coming away splendidly. A little onion sowing has been done, but this will not be general for a few days yet. Growers say that the land is rather damp. The monthly meeting, of the Marshland Hall Committee was held, when there were present: Messrs H. B. Hibbard (chairman), D. Goode, G. Chisnall, L. Wilson, R.' Monk, J. Sibbald, J. Sehmanski, and W. Waugh. The chairman reported that extensive repairs had been carried out to the hall, and he mentioned that the grounds wanted filling up and levelling. An offer of sand from the Speedway Club for this purpose was received. It was decided to defer this work until; after the annual meeting, which will be held this month.
The monthly meeting of the Marshland sub-branch of the Plunket Society was hold on Thursday afternoon. There wore present Mrs Waugh (president), Mesdames. Roberts, Sturgiss, Lohrey, L. Kingston, Treleaven, and Gabites. The secretary reported on the recent social, which had been a great success. Thanks were due' to the donors of prizes—Mi's Lohrey, Mrs Sturgiss, Mrs Roberts, and Mrs H. G. Watson. It was decided that the times of the nurse's visits to. Marshland will be on the first, and third Wednesdays of each month, and that the monthly .meeting should be on the second Thursday of e-'-ch month The nurse's report for August was received. The president reminded members' of the opening of the new Pluhket rooms in . Christchurch. LEESTON. Mrs F. W. Harris, who died at.Leeston early in the week at the age of 78 years, arrived in New Zealand in the early days, and at the age of eighteen years married Mr Broars, also an early settler. After living in various parts of Canterbury, Mr and Mrs Brears settled at Mafkett for a number of years, then at Brookside, and later at Lees toil, where Mr Brears died in 1919. About seven years ago Mrs Brears married Mr F. W. Harris. She is survived by her husband and a family of ton; Masdames Emery (Cashmere); Peterson (Auckland), Martin (Petone), Atkinson (England), R. Duff (Leeston), A. G. Howson (Sedgemere), and 111. T. Manson (Leeston) and Messrs T. Brears (Southbridge), Henry Brears (Dunsandel), and W. Brears (Southbridge. The interment took place on Thursday in the Anglican portion of. the Ellesmere Cemetery, the Rev. N. A. Friberg conducting a. service at St. John's, Church before the cortege left, for the .cemetery, »md also the service at-the grave.. ' Messrs Tom, Henry," and William Brears.' and Mr B. R. Howson were the pall-bearers.
