CITY COUNCIL.

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The Christchurch City Council met last night, when there wcr& presie'nt:— The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer), Crs. T. H. Butterfield, Annie Fraer, M. E. Lyons, A. W. Beaven, A. E. Armstrong, E. Pariane, J. Parlane, H. T. J. Thacker, J. W. Beanland, E. H. Andrews, C. E. Jones, and A. A. McLachlan. The financial statement showed that receipts since last meeting were £24,849 16s 3d. Accounts authorised for payment by the Finance Committee amounted to £27,691 4s Bd. The By-laws, Finance, and Departmental Committee's report stated that Miss M. Courtney, of the Rates Department, had been appointed rates check clerk. Mr T. Tucker, a junior clerk in the Rates Department, had been promoted to the vacancy caused by Miss Courtney's transfer. M. Gorrie, messenger,, would be transferred to the Bates Department, and somebody else appointed to take his place. The committee was given authority to make the appointments. The Divisional Superintendent of New Zealand Railways had asked if the Council would consider closing the public level crossing on the railway lines at Park road, Addington. The Addington Burgesses had protested and this protest the Council endorsed. An application from Messrs Smith and Sampson asking the Council to approve of two rights-ofrway, one on either side of the new street to bo formed between Gloucester and Armagh streets, was consented to subject to the usual conditions. These will run behind theproposed allotments fronting the new road with access .to either end of it. Permission was granted Mr F. O. Shacklock to install four 500 gallon petrol tanks on the premises of tho Red Star Motors, Ltd. The Boulevard. Messrs T. D. Harman and Son had written stating that Mr Ernest Hall was prepared to accept the offer to purchase his property in River road, for £1650 provided that the cost of the agreement was borne by the Council. The arrangement was approved. The committee .also reported that the owner of the land at the south-east corner of Armagh street and Stanmore road —the only piece required for widening the road between Gloucester streot and Armagh street on that side of the road—had asked £2OO as compensation for the loss of land and depreciation. It was decided to offer £l4O in full compensation. The tender of Williamson and Co. for £6910s for printing 500 copies ot the Year Book was accepted. " The committee also' reported that negiotiatibris for the'acquisition of land ..for rounding the corner of . Watford and Halt'on streets had failed. Should the owner not come to some reasonable agreement within 28 days, the land will be taken under the Public Works Act. The Council resolved to pay to the funds of the Arthur's Pass National Park Board, .as guaranteed, half the sum of £350 provided on the estimates fof this purpose. Electricity. According to the Electricity Committee's report, an Improvement in the' lighting at Cook and Ross's Corner was urgently needed, and the Council decided to place a 600 candle-power lamp centrally over Armagh-Colombo street. Water Supply and Works Committee. The Water Supply and Works Committeo reported that it hoped to have sufficient funds from the roadinjg loan to have Colombo street concreted between Carlyle and Hastings street during- the coming summer. Cr. Beanland said the work would be proceeded with as soon as possible. Subject: to minor considerations, the plan for a new street, Avebury avenue, off North Avon road, was approved. The Council gave its consent to a railway siding being-constructed into Mr C. S. McCully -s property in Sohyyn street and another into the premises of Messrs A. S. Faterson and Co., Ltd.; on condition that the applicants deposilted a sum sufficient to cover the cost of the work. Old Clock Tower Site. The By-laws Committee reported having approved of a plan showing the proposed safety zone on tho Clock Tower site in the form of. a triangle with a light stone wall about 16 ' inches high, similar to that opposite, the Excelsior Hotel'. A footpath, slightly raised, would be formed round- the triangle and finished off with white cement edging; this would be used for waiting. tramway, passengers. The report was adopted.
