BOROUGH COUNCILS

NEW BRIGHTON. The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last night. Present —The Mayor (Mr J, H. Shaw), and Crs. F. P. Muirson, E. L. Smith, A. E. Lawry, S. J. Bargrove, E. A. M. Leaver, E. A. Stokes, aid J. S. Ainsworth. A motion of sympathy 'with the relatives of the late Mr J. A.Flesher was passed. The Mayor referred to the sterling work which had been done by Mr Flesher in his capacity as solicitor to the New Brighton Borough Council. The New Brighton Football CI ab was granted the sole use of tho sports ground on September 20th for the annual inter-borough Rugby ■ football match.. Permission to tako up a collection at the gates that day was also granted. Mr G. A. Brown wrote offering an. apology in respect of the charge made by him against an officer of the Couneil. Cr. Ainsworth suggested that as,other local bodies were curtailing their street lighting owing to the shortage of water at Lake Coleridge, New Brighton should fall in line. After some discussion it was decided tb leave the matter in abeyance until some intimation was received from the City Council. In the Standing Committee's report, :which was adopted, .correspondence, from the Christchurch Traciway: Board, was referred to. " The. Board . forwarded plans of the lay-out of the proposed trolley bus polesin. the borough. The jnatter. was . left in the hands of the Mayor and Chairman of' Works. It was decided to advise the" North Beach" and Waimairi Progress League that the Council could not -see its way at present to carry out the . work of continuing the widening of the Esplanade from Barry street northward. The Finance and By-Laws • Committee's report, which was-adopted,.recom-mended ..that the . Council should subsidise money raised by the New Brighton Municipal Band for the purchase of new uniforms, £ 1 for £l* up to £ 40. Accounts amounting to' i£B26 ,9s -10 d were pafl'sed' for payment.
