RESISTING ARREST.
FIREMAN SENT TO GAOL. (P3ES3 ASSOCIATION TELEQKAII.) WELLINGTON, August 8. Contradictory evidence was given when Angus McDonald, aged twenty r seven years, a fireman, was charged with resisting a constable in the lawful execution of his duty. The charge was the outcome of an affair outside a dance hall at the corner of Cuba and Vivian streets on February 22nd The police attempted to arrest McDonald, who resisted violently. The crowd took his part, the police being roughly handled, and accused getting away He gave himself up a few days ago. Some witnesses said he did not start the row, but was acting the part of peacemaker. Mr E. Page, S.M., said he did not look lightly on resistance of the police, especially in - the face of a hostile crowd 6uch as gathered that night. He imposed a sentence of three months' hard labour. Accused was also fined £2 for assaulting Percival Jones in default seven days' imprisonment. When Mr Page said the license of the hall shoujd he taken awav the police replied' that that already had been done.
