MIDDLETON YARDS.
PROPOSAL TO CLOSE THEM FOR PERIOD. It is understood that part of tho plan to economise in the railway service involves a proposal to close tho marshalling yards at Middleton for a certain period in the year. It has been found that during slack times it is possible to cope vvith all the marshalling work from the Cliristchurch yards.
When there is a big amount of traffic being handled by the railways there is ample work available to keep the Middleton yards fully utilised, but after July, when the gram stock and wool freight has been dealt with, there is not the same need for these yards. It was foubd some time ago that when the vards at Middleton were closed down for alterations and extensions, no diffieultv was experienced in handling the business in Christchurch, in consequence of which it is considered that the Christchurch yards could be used regularly in quiet neriods for such a purpose. In the event of the Middleton yards being closed as suggested, it is probable that the men employed there would be transferred to other branches of the service without loss of status.
