AMATEUR CYCLING.

y PAPANUI SPORTS CLUB. Two road races were held by the Papanut Amateur Sports Club at Ilarovvood on Saturday afternoon. On® wag an open 25-mile handicap and the other a sealed handicap Derby race, over 20 miles, (or riders under 18 years of age. Both ruoen wore held roulid the same block ot approximately live miles, the Derby riders leaving immediately alter the scratch men in the opeu hand, Cap, The races Were the most spectacular held this season, and very exciting finishes were witnessed. Twenty-one rider* started in the open handicap, with I*. O. Lukey, W. A. Christensen, and J. L. Richards on scratch, conceding 84 minutes to U. VV. Skidmore and 0. W. Uuodger, on the limit. Owing to the absence ot several riders, and the Derby race being run, there was a break ot three minutes between the dispatch of the first and second groups. Skidmore and Qoodger covered the first lap In I6mln. The next lot passed at l7min 85aec, having gained 2Gat>c on the leadors. The scratch men covered the first lap in ISmin 26sec, having gained lmin 25sec on the leaders and 25sec on the group immediately in front of them. In the next lap Skidmore had a puncture, leaving Goodger the formidable task of completing the journey by himself. He eompleted the laj> at 80min 25Sec, two miautes ahead ot the next bunch. During the lap the 2i, BJ, and the 4}min riders had bunched. M. F. Pearl, with his usual dash, tried to break away from the bunch, but before two miles had been covered he realised the folly of his effort so early in the race, and Was overtaken and dropped before the lap was completed. L. J. Pearco (ljmin), who had IOBt bis co-marker, 0, F. Brown, through a puncture, had dropped back add passed tvith the BCrfttch fliers. At this stage they were 4min 55sec b&fclhd thd leader. At IS mileß Goodger was still leading by lmin 4256e. The gaps between the remaining bunches were getting much smaller, and here it looked as if the back' markers were going to get up. Pearl had dropped back, and was now in company with R. Richards, halt a minute behind hit co» markers. The scratch men gained another minute On the leader during this lap, At the bell, Oooilger was still riding well, having a lead of fiOsec, the others being together in one big bunch. Turning into Harewood road and being assisted by a back wind, Qoodger went all out for the last two miles and crossed the line 400 yards ahead of the others. About a mile from the line L. Buckley (SJmin) went ahead of the big munch, gaining a good lead. The others left their sprint until within a short distance of the line, too lata to overtake Buckley, who Won by about 10 yards. The others were all very close together, making the judging very difficult. The following are the times and placing*:—0. W. Qoodger (SJmin), 75mln 22sec .. 1 It. Ten riders started in the Derby rice, under different sealed handicaps. At- the end of the first lap G. R. Giles led, followed by 8. Weir, 11. Reeves, H. Wildermoth, I, J. Lester, and L. R. Alexander, They covered the five-mile lap In 15min Bsec. The neict lap saw Weir in the lead, with Giles, Wildermoth, and Reeves. The lap this time was covered in 14min STsec. With five miles to go Weir again was in the lend, followed closely by Giles. There was a good sprint between Giles and Weir for fastest time, Giles winning by a length. The results were as follows I H. Reenres (2min), time 60min .. i R. Wildermoth (2min), 60min 3sec .. 2 S. Weir (ljmin), SOmin SSseo ~ 3 The bine ribbon for fastest time was gained by G. Giles (scr) in SOmin 64seo.
