A FATAL FALL. OLD MAN SUPS ON STAIRS. An old man named Pope, aged about years, fell down the stairs at the entrance of the Empire Cafe in Manchester street at 4.25 p.m. last evening, and received injuries to the i»oad from which he died in Hospital to p.m. Pope had been boarding latterly at Lichfield street. At the place where the accident occurred there are twelve steps leading down into the cafe, with a landing and a right angle turn after the first nine. Pope was found lying unconscious on the landing, suffering from a blow on the head. It appears that he must have slipped and fallen while descending the first few Bteps, striking his head either t>n the wall or on the steps as he fell. An inquest is to be held. PALL FROM SCAFFOLDING. Maxwell Conrad Smith, a single man aged 26, of 16 Stafford street, received head injuries on Saturday morning, when he fell twelve feet from a scaffold. He was working at the time on the now City Hotel in Bath street. The Christchurch Hospital, where he was taken for treatment, reported last night that his condition was satisfactory. MOTOR-CYCLIST HURT. When his motor-cycle collidod with a motor-car near Weedons early yesterday evening, J. Buchanan, who resides at Picton avenue, received injuries about the face that resulted in his admission to the Christchurch Hospital at 6.30 p.m. Buchanan's cycle collided with the ear from behind. COLLISION AT NEW BRIGHTON. On Saturday afternoon, at about 4 o'clock, a collision occurred between a motor-cycle and an Ebsox sedan motorcar at the corner of the Esplanade and Hawke street.

It is stated that the motor-cyclist (Mr S. M. Haywood, of North Beach) was travelling north and endeavouring to pass the car, which was moving across the Esplanade towards the waterfront, wher> his machine came in contact with a front mudguard of the oar. ! Haywood, whose machine was considerably damaged, was attended to by Dr. Currie, and taken to his homo. The driver of the car was Mr Harold Townsend, of 440 Cashel stroet, Christchurch. CAR OVER A BANK. I (HUMS AMOCIATIO* nUOftAX.) OREYMOUTH, July 19. Four members of the crew of the Tees who were returning early this morning to Greymouth from a Blackball dance were injured when a car struck loose shingta. The tyre burst and the car went over a fifty-foot bank. Joseph Bond suffered a dislocated thigh; Roy Whitelaw, back injuries; and Edward Coglan, concussion. They were admitted to hospital. Clarence William Adams, the driver, escaped with bruises. ________ i FOOTBALLER INJURED. Falconer, who is five-eighths, had been playing brilliant football up to tho time of his injury, and his loss to Southland football on the eve of Shield matches js a heavy one. RUN OYER TW*CB.

Mr Henry Mason, aged 66, living in New Lynn, was walking on the Great North road near New Lynn on Saturday evening when ho was struck by the side-car of a motor-cyclist. The rider of tie machine went for assistance, leaving Mr Mason on the road with another man. While Mr Mason was lying on the road a light truck-ran over nis legs, and did not stop. Mr Mason died in the Auckland Hospital this morning with a fractured skull and a compound fracture of both legs.
